As with any dating service, it has its advantages and disadvantages.
The nice thing about speed dating is that you get to see right away who you're dealing with - no faked photos, no phony online personas. It's not about having to tell your entire life story in those few minutes, the important thing is that you hit it off with someone, that you get that interpersonal chemistry from her. If you don't care to talk to her, you can mark her as such and you likely won't see her again.
The downside is that the matchmaking is entirely out of your hands, you have to trust that the moderator is actually going to match you and ya never know if she thinks you're a serial stalker or whatever. At least with the internet, you have that control for yourself. Also, you are essentially competing with the other guys there, so when the chicks are filling out their match cards they are going to compare you against the guys who are younger, taller, darker, more handsome, more money, more exciting jobs and more adventurous lives.
If you want to try it out:
- dress up like you're meeting a girl for a casual date, so ditch the Green Lantern T-shirt and ball-cap and put on a clean button-down shirt and pressed pants.
- hygiene is of utmost importance.
- go there with the purpose of enjoying the event
- socialize, even if its with other guys
- be yourself, don't be fronting or lying about yourself
- drinks will be served (at least one will be free) but don't get plastered.
