national security. some brands especially china need all electronic devices to have a backdoor built into it so that everything can go back to china and hence you are losing privacy. it's in the laws. we are now in the new era of war. ;)
what laws?

The tinfoil is right here.

Meanwhile, back on topic:
My Speakout phone is still working. Some 7-11 stores have the free sims and some have just stopped Speakout all together.
Have heard of some issues registering the new SIMs, so I'm just going to continue as is until if/when I can no longer connect.

Yup. So far my 3g 10 year old alcatel is working fine. Wonder what went wrong.

I have attached below an email that I received from Speakout. They say they are not going out of business and are offering a free migration SIM card starting next week or you can switch to Lucky. Going to wait until next week and get their free SIM and see what happens.

SpeakOut Wireless is upgrading to a new 4G VoLTE network with better coverage, faster data speeds, and improved rates. To keep your phone number active, you need to take action.

Here are your options:

Option 1 – Switch to Lucky Mobile (Recommended if you want to keep your current phone)
  • Keep your current 3G phone and your phone number
  • Enjoy coast-to-coast coverage and affordable plans
  • Receive a FREE Lucky Mobile SIM card with FREE shipping
Learn More & Switch to Lucky

Option 2 – Stay with SpeakOut (Requires a 4G VoLTE phone)
  • Upgrade to a 4G VoLTE-compatible phone (most newer iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and other LTE Band 2, 4, 7, 66 models with VoLTE)
  • Pick up your FREE SpeakOut migration SIM at 7-Eleven stores starting the week of September 8, 2025
  • More details on new plans will be shared soon by email
Already have a 4G VoLTE-compatible phone? GREAT! Pick up your FREE migration SIM in stores starting the week of September 8!

Important: SpeakOut is not going out of business — but you must choose one of these options to keep your number active. If no action is taken, your phone number will eventually be lost.

Thank you for being a valued SpeakOut Wireless customer.

Per oprime's post, if you're planning to stick with speakout and choose option 2, you should pick up their migration SIM card and ensure that your phone is volte compatible. I tried to get the migration SIM card, but the 711 staff did not know anything about it, so I will try again later.

When they know anything about it? Don't hold your breath.

Depends on the store.

My 4G card still won't work, but the 3G continues to plug away.

I still find it strange that Speakout is continuing to offer service, but even today I got another notice from them advising I should switch to Lucky. What a strange business strategy.

I don't think that speakout has the 4g network running yet. When/if they do, you probably need to port your number to the new SIM card. It is probably the same procedure as if you had lost your phone/SIM card. Hope they will provide some clear instructions. Fingers crossed.

I am about to get a new phone, but if it's just a question of Speakout not having their 4g network running yet, I'll hold off, as that would probably explain why it isn't working. Have followed all their instructions to port over to 4g, but nothing works. Impossible to get through to them, so not optimistic they actually plan to continue providing service.

Am also curious if anyone has managed to get their new 4g sim to work on Speakout.

I used my iPhone 6 with the “old” sim today and it still works. I’ll just wait it out and see how things go…at least until someone gets a solid answer that works

Isn't your maxwest neo flip a 4g phone? If it is, I think holding off on getting a new one is the right call.

It is a 4g. Not sure how long the 3g sim will continue to work. I wish it was possible to get through to Speakout to get some answers, so that's another concern.

I hope they get their act together too. Maybe they are still negotiating with rogers.
Maybe, but it would help if they put info on their page, or would respond to customers.
I have had more than one plce tell me the phone I have isn't really 4G, and is not supported.

that is because after 2g/3g shutdown, the networks nowadays only accept phone brands that have a market here in canada. this is why if you buy an iphone, or google phone anywhere in the world that has volte feature, then the phone is good to be used here. all phones made nowadays are merging into 3gpp standard and the networks around the world are following this standard. many brands don't want that. so...

I also picked up the new free sim card from 7-11 and started the migration process, but they are forcing you to pick one of there monthly plans in the setup process. So I chose to stay on my older SIM with my 5G capable phone and everything seems to be working fine still. 7-11 still advertises the pay as you go on there website so hopefully they are still keeping that service.

They also have a deal on a phone that runs until the end of October.

your old sim is 3g only. for 4g use, you need 4g sim card. so right now you are still in 3g data speed, 3g voice, and 3g mms. you won't be able to use the sim card starting 2026.
the mobile game has evolved since they are doing r&d on 6g now. so operators like 7-11 are starting to get defunct.

Recently topped up my minutes so that service is still available. Still on 3G. I picked up a 4G sim card; staff don't know too much about what's happening, but that's business as usual at most businesses.
Back of the SIM package reads:

To use our service, your phone must meet the following requirements:
Unlocked: Your phone must not be ties to another carrier'
4G capable: Supports high-speed LTE networks.
Supports LTE bands 2,4,7, and 66: These are the specific frequencies we use.
VoLTE (Voice over LTE): Enables clear voice calls over LTE.

My phone doesn't support LTE band 66, so I'll have to wait to see how things play out.
