Find and click the settings icon -> network and internet -> sims -> speakout -> preferred network type -> select 4G or LTE if that option is there.
it is a 3g sim card. so you won't get 4g. period. it's a technical thing. the only solution is to buy a 4g or 5g sim card from lucky mobile. period.

I haven’t tried using my “fun phone” yet but it shows bars so I’m hoping I can continue to use it. Thanks SolidS for another option

Now I'm confused. My phone is also 4g compatible, but it still shows I'm on the 3G network, and everything is still working as normal. Why does the sim card make a difference?
Well, at first I thought SIMs were network specific and aren't compatible with other networks. And then I read this:

Are 3G sims compatible with 4G networks?

"Yes, a 3G SIM card is compatible with a 4G network in terms of physical and basic connectivity. You can use a 3G SIM card in a 4G phone, and it will work for making calls, sending texts, and accessing data. The 3G SIM card will allow the phone to connect to the 3G and 2G networks available in your area. However, to access 4G data speeds, the phone itself must be capable of 4G connectivity, and the SIM card must be activated for 4G on the carrier's network. While the 3G SIM can be used in a 4G phone, it will not provide 4G speeds unless the device and network plan support it. The SIM card's primary role is authentication and identification, and modern SIMs are designed to be backward compatible, meaning a 3G SIM can function on a 4G network, but the data speed will be limited by the phone's capabilities and the network's available technology."

So I'm guessing the only difference is data (intarwebs) and if the 3G sim is activated for 4G on the carriers network?
Maybe once they turn off the switch to 3G everything stops?

Basically, if my phun phone is still working in a month, I'll see if 7-11 still has top ups.

Weird, so. If someone wants to get on Speakout again, would that work? All I need is a 3g+4g phone? Would the newer ones that use 5g work? I'll have to find one in the drawer for these older phones if needed.

Went to get a Chatr sim and plan, and was told my crappy Maxwest Neo won't work on Chatr, and isn't supported by most networks. Had that confirmed at another mobile place.
Will keep pursuing some solution.

I have attached below an email that I received from Speakout. They say they are not going out of business and are offering a free migration SIM card starting next week or you can switch to Lucky. Going to wait until next week and get their free SIM and see what happens.

SpeakOut Wireless is upgrading to a new 4G VoLTE network with better coverage, faster data speeds, and improved rates. To keep your phone number active, you need to take action.

Here are your options:

Option 1 – Switch to Lucky Mobile (Recommended if you want to keep your current phone)
  • Keep your current 3G phone and your phone number
  • Enjoy coast-to-coast coverage and affordable plans
  • Receive a FREE Lucky Mobile SIM card with FREE shipping
Learn More & Switch to Lucky

Option 2 – Stay with SpeakOut (Requires a 4G VoLTE phone)
  • Upgrade to a 4G VoLTE-compatible phone (most newer iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and other LTE Band 2, 4, 7, 66 models with VoLTE)
  • Pick up your FREE SpeakOut migration SIM at 7-Eleven stores starting the week of September 8, 2025
  • More details on new plans will be shared soon by email
Already have a 4G VoLTE-compatible phone? GREAT! Pick up your FREE migration SIM in stores starting the week of September 8!

Important: SpeakOut is not going out of business — but you must choose one of these options to keep your number active. If no action is taken, your phone number will eventually be lost.

Thank you for being a valued SpeakOut Wireless customer.

Thanks. That sounds encouraging. My phone is 4G VoLTE compatible. Hopefully my phone can be migrated over onto the Speakout frequency I've been using. Strange there isn't anything about this on their website that I could find.

They're unwise not announcing this sooner. I already switched to Fizz (free eSIM). I wouldn't be the only one who ported their number elsewhere.

Seems strange marketing from Speakout if they are continuing to offfer service, since all their communication was directing customers to Lucky.

I had been receiving texts that my service will be disrupted after August 31, but because of the confusing information, decided to just wait and see what would happen. So far everything is still working fine. I am using a 5g phone.

Does your display say you're still on 3G?

people, let me remind you again. it doesn't matter if you have a 4g phone or 5g phone because it also depends on the sim card. if sim card is 3g, then your voice and data will be both in 3g max. therefore you need a 4g sim card or 5g sim card in order to use 4g or above for both data and voice. now for 4g sim card, some devices are 4g lte, but may still be on 3g due to the os doesn't support 4g voice. so if that's the case, you will need to upgrade your device to support 4g voice (volte). for 5g devices, you don't have to worry about it. so once 7-11 upgraded their network to 4g for both voice and data, purchase their 4g sim card and use it so that starting 2026, everything will work.

all networks in canada will retire 2g and 3g services starting jan 1 2026 to the general public. these are only for emergency (911) calls. canada is lagging behind on the technology of mobile networks. many countries have already retired their 2g and 3g networks to the general public several years ago including USA.

How can I find out if I have a 3g SIM card or a 4g SIM card?
