Chatr has $100/year plan but it is talk & text, no data.

https://www.chatrwireless.com/plans

Not sure how one can sign up for that plan, if ID is required or not, or if auto-payment. is required. I was planning to drop by chatr booth today but something else came up. Will try this week if I can catch them before they close at 6 pm.
Found a "Mobile Klink" store that offered $99.00 per year. Talk and text. No data. Said I could keep my phone number. Don't know if they offered a free sim card. Will check again. Talked to somebody a Chatr who didn't mention the one-year plan. Will double check that one also.

Is there anything out there like Speakout, where you just buy a top up with cash, enter a pin number and it's done? All anonymously? Can be done at various locations?

Here's an email from SpeakOut:

The retirement of the 3G (HSPA) network, starting August 31, 2025, will only affect customers who rely on that network. If your phone is compatible with the 4G LTE network, your service will not be interrupted, and you do not need to switch. Our partnership with Lucky Mobile and the free SIM card offer is specifically for customers whose service will be impacted by the 3G shutdown.

If you do make the switch to Lucky Mobile, you balance will be forfeit, as they are a different service provider. You can upgrade your phone to a 4G LTE compatible device to keep your account with us and your balance intact.

The question remains whether SpeakOut will be able to continue using Rogers network:

I would have to ask what is the point going beyond 4 G. You can get video on 4G. 5G has alot more bandwidth, but unless you are doing video chats or movies, its pointless for everyday use.

As they're dumping customers off to Lucky 4G, don't gamble on continued coverage on Speakout if you want to keep your number.

That's the clearest information yet. Thanks.

4G is data. In order to have voice on 4G, another channel needs to be opened on the 4G network. Since 4G is about 10 years now and almost everyone is using 4G phone, voice on 4G is also now becoming matured. So, phone networks can re-use 2G/3G spectrums on 4G and beyond. Therefore, resources are not being wasted. And also they can free up some of these spectrums for emergency using 2G/3G networks. So now, emergency responders can get quicker response time.

My current phone with Speakout is VoLTE (4G) compatible. I have active minutes on it, so I'm just going to wait to see what happens.
When I asked at 7-11 about the network shutdown they didn't know anything about it, but they're still selling top-ups. Hope this isn't some scammy way of making money at the expense of customers. Guess time will tell.

On a related note: My daily driver will become a nice paperweight probably by the end of the year when the other carriers shed themselves of 3G. Sad, I've had it since 2012.
Guess It's time to get that Pixel 8 and install Graphene OS. (y)

Sounds like it will continue service for now into September. Still uncertain of the long term future.

Well, Sept first and my connection is still active. Still have bars and the notification that I'm connected to Speakout. My phone is 4G compatable, but according to Chatr's web site my sim card isn't.

How do I check if I'm on a 3G SIM card?
3G SIM cards start with 8930272041299 or lower. If you need a new SIM, visit your nearest store location or visit chatrwireless.com. Once you have your new SIM, please complete the following

Before you Sign in to your My chatr account, please make sure you are connected to Wifi Go to profile tab and then ‘manage your account’ and then select ‘change SIM card’

You may need to reboot your phone
My sim starts with 891. . . So I assume it'll stop working at some point.
Anyone else have any issues?

Now I'm confused. My phone is also 4g compatible, but it still shows I'm on the 3G network, and everything is still working as normal. Why does the sim card make a difference?

(android)

Find and click the settings icon -> network and internet -> sims -> speakout -> preferred network type -> select 4G or LTE if that option is there.
