I have a house with a pool in Arizona and am thinking about putting a solar panels. I have done some research on the internet, but it is very confusing. Can anyone give me some advice, please?

Geo-Thermal technology may be an option.
You can keep the house cool and keep your
pool warm at the same time.

I have thought of going the solar panel route but from what I have read and from what alin added to this thread that confirms it just is not worth it.

depending on how deep your pool is and how much shade it's in you may find that even a very minimal solar collector will suffice. Our house in Mesa needed only a passive system that was very easy to maintain.

you'd get good information talking to local inspectors - local to arizona that is - or on local websites

As mentioned above, the biggest, quickest return on your investment is to heat water, either your pool, and/or your incoming cold water. It is generally accepted that water enters a house at about 6 degs, so any lift in that temperature you can achieve with cheap solar panels before it enters your fuelled hot water heater, is a saving.. Subscribe to Home Power Magazine it will give you a very US centric view of the current state of the art..

alinburnaby, which Vertical Axis Wind Turbine did you purchase? And, have you considered taking your Muni to court/appealing about their refusal. I know (or rather have heard) of folk taking stratas to court when they are not allowed to install solar panels on the outside of their units, and winning. In this day and age I suspect you would have a good chance of winning too.

I expect you've seen/know about it, but Jay Leno's Garage has a VWT and an interesting website at: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/jay-leno/green-garage/4216780

My house is in Scottsdale close to Phoenix. Since it is a desert, there is plenty of sun a year around. The house is about 3500 sq foot with standard size outdoor pool, 20 by 40 feet and 9 feet, the deepest end. The solar panels are for heating the pool and supplying electricity for the home and water heater too. The electricity bill can be $400 a month during the summer since it gets so hot down there. I rent out this home sometimes so I can write this installation as tax write-off too. Sure, we will have a nice PERB member party at my house:) Thanks for the info.

yah, i never thought of that - waste heat from air conditioning to heat the pool. not a bad idea, there should be something off the shelf that will achieve that

I had to add a hot water storage tank because I hadn't expected that it would work so well in Canada.
i understand that solar technology has reached the point where direct sunlight is no longer needed - simple overcast daylight will run the cells. is that the case?

Just a separate ground coil off a geothermal heat pump to send the heated fluid through a heat exchanger with the pool water. Add a thermostat controlled valve on that heat pump line to prevent overheating the pool.
my understanding is that a geothermal field eventually freezes, rendering it ineffective. i know we're talking the better part of a century, but just sayin'...

is that true?

The Solar water system doesn't even have to be on the South facing roof. The system I have has the Solar Water panels on the East and West faces. I get hot water even when it's raining. There is a gas-fired demand system installed if needed, but so far it hasn't been. I think if the house was fully occupied (all bedrooms had occupants) the gas demand system might kick in, but so far it has been a waste of money.
if you'll pardon the expression - COOL!

thanks al

nice idea but nope - you need the heat for the pool in the winter when the ac is not used - In the summer the pool will be ambient and at 110F it's just fine as is. Photovoltaics are not cost effective for supplying 200 or more amps and battery storage is absurd for a 3500 sq ft house. If you were in Gila Bend wind power could work for you but in Scottsdale no chance.
