Soderbergh's Girlfriend Experience...

I caught Soderbergh’s new movie about escorts online and I must say I’m not thrilled about how he represents review boards.

Girlfriend Experience chooses to use the character of “The Erotic Connoisseur to symbolize both the review writer. The Connoisseur is a hideous creature who invites the main character to his pad and promises her a positive review, and future opportunities to enhance her income, in return for sexual favors. Spouting lines like “it sounds like white slavery, but it’s not…” when discussing a potential opportunity for the escort in Dubai, it’s obvious that this character is meant to exemplify a very negative aspect of the sex work industry.

I've read about many similar characters here on PERB who will threaten escorts for good reviews or else. There are ' jerks ' out there doing this sort of thing so why not tell it like it is ?

Does this make you nervous ' upherbum ' ? lol

I'd have to agree. For drama, the movie wanted to use this aspect of the reviewer members because it makes a better story, but it certainly exists. You know this from the very long list of sps and escorts who are on DNR, or don't join but slam the boards on their websites, etc.

Many of the ones doing it don't actually post reviews, they don't make other posts either, so the sp doesn't actually know their real handle (or even if they really have a handle or are just lurkers). Some of the more outspoken posters probably have their handles "borrowed" by these unscrupulous types. I think there are very few sps who hasn't had this threat of a bad review or promise of a good one in exchange for a lower rate.

Plus the fact that many posters use the boards to imply that lower rates or more services and less restrictions is the only way to get biz. The reviews reflect higher marks for this, and lower marks for any sp who provide safer encounters or higher rates. There is a lot of pressure on any sp who thinks reviews will make a difference, only to find out that the only way to get a good one, or one without a lot of negative comments, is to have lower rates with less restrictions regardless of her personal preferences.

Not about hating the bad apples, but the fact that it happens off board. Not to established sps, not to anyone who has it all together, but to the newer ones. Take a look at trackstars post awhile back when he talked to someone new to the biz, as she had it happen to her. Also, the link specifically mentions TER, and that bozo who ran it.

The best thing to do is to acknowledge and expose it, and for the guys who post in to be aware of the consequences of what they are doing, especially when it can be perceived to be coercing or pressuring. What better way to shut up a poster who agrees that the cbj is the best way to go than for a couple of loud mouthed guys to call him a lap dog or to somehow indicate that he is an idiot for going along with that. See it all the time; makes quieter guys with seemingly unpopular opinions stay quiet and all the sp sees is one POV. It will have an impact.

All of that is just to say I know that the movie chooses this kind of review board member because it makes a better story, but they chose this kind of person because they do indeed exist -- and by existing, they make it much much harder for everyone in the business especially all the good apples.
