I've always had a taste for nice highend liquors that you would drink socially whether it be single malt scotch, great vodka's, and especially sipping tequila.

NOT the stuff you might bury within a Margarita but the good stuff you would pull out for a good friend to savour over a sip rather than down the hatch in a shot glass.

Did you know the bartender who started the Margarita did it to hide the harsh taste of the Tequila?

I digress. I've been reading about the different micro distillery's popping up in Mexico that have access to mature agave plants. They are toasting the agave, aging it in oak, curing the plants with vanilla plants to create a whole new genre of tequila.

Two I have tried are the Don Julio Anejo 1942 and the T1 Anejo Estelar. Not cheap at $150 and $83 respectively a bottle. Like I said, for sipping, social drinking and absolutely full of flavour.

On my shit list as far as sipping taste are Cabo Wabo Reposado and Patron Reposado. Primarilaly because they taste like medicine and are heavily promoted through international advertising. The Patron Anejo and the young Silver are both excellent IMHO. I also have a bottle at the back of the cabinet from Don Julio Anejo that is not the 1942 version that is quite amazing. Not available in BC Liquor stores but found in U.S. Duty Free or Mexico.

One of those tequilas makes my ATF fucked in my gf's lap. Can you guess which one?

Haha another drunk poster ;)

Well both bottles have a long neck and one looks like a "I dream of Genie" bottle.

I went on a tequila distillery tour in mexico a few years ago. They talked about the three grades that they manufacture being bronze, silver and gold. I was shocked at the difference in the taste of the different grades. The bronze being the harsh tasting tequila we see here, but the other two were amazing, so smooth. They also make them in flavours, chocolate, coffee and such.

Three Fingers Tequila, it comes in a Black Tower shaped bottle, and is available here.
Sometimes you have to order it in , but they can get it. It's very smooth for a lower end bottle of To-Kill-Yah but it's my go too.
I highly recommend it.
Your right... there is a massive selection right now of Micro breweries in Mexico doing an outstanding job...But you can still buy the rot gut on the street in a bleach bottle for 3 bucks, that will make you wake up in the morning cuddling with one of Mexico's wild street dogs..

I enjoy T too much .

el_Jimador Brand for my Tequila / Peach / Slurppies.
And Olmeca Altos for sipping. Good enough for my battered taste buds.

See top ten Tequila sites

Does agave spirit seep thru to my Perb-posts : )

tasty
I used to get that el Jimador for Margarita's too. Good price point and doesn't taste too bad straight up either. I note that they do not say 100% agave on their label?

Anyways thanks for those links. Looks like some good reading in there.

For a Mexican like me there is only one: Herradura Reposado, you can even taste the flavor of the keg. Herradura Blanco really strong but ithat is the the way that the tequila must be!!! (NEVER use for mix, this two have to be straight, perhaps sipping with a glass of Sangrita Viuda de Sanchez!!!

For cocktails the best is Cazadores, Jimador, Tepa. (this last one only availabla in Tepatitlan -Jalisco.)

Salud!!!,

Mi amigos and I discovered El Jimador about 10 years ago and it has been the go-to ever since. Good enough to sip and cheap enough to mix, what more do you really need?
Fun Fact; the jimador is the guy that harvests/trims /prepares the cactus ball, or so I was told.

I think the one I tried last year on New Years was called TAVI. It's clear and 100 bottle roughly. Was really smooth and have somewhat of a body stone feeling like a good scotch does. I drank shot for shot with my dad and kid brother and the bottle was gone within an hour. IT was just really easy to put back.

I think it was tequila. ---- purchased at the big wobbly pop store off Cambie.

I was reading this threading looking back on a Mexico trip I took with s good friend /client. We thought we would go for a walk and every place that sold liquore we would try a different tequila. About 5 blocks later -- HOLY MOLY -- WERE WE EVER ON OUR WAY. The trip was a blur but I think that was the night I got s big stick tied s steak to it it, and went down to the Marina to try to fish for crocodiles. Could have also been the night I nearly got stuck up s coco nut tree or the night we climbed over the cement wall to escaped the on site security (who seemed to enjoy following me) and frolicked around on the beach stark naked jumping into the crashing waves, getting caught up in the under tow and laughing our asses off as we struggled to get out of the water.

There was s whole lot of tequila on that trip.

Your Mexico trip sounds like a lot of fun.

Tavi is a really nice tequila and I enjoyed it's taste.

I'm finding I'm pretty black and white taste wise with some of the tequilas. I either like them or put them away to be used for Marg's during the summer time. They taste a bit rough or like medicine.

Some of those fruit infused Tequilas are quite tasty !

I tried one as a desert drink and quite liked it. IIRC it has pomegranate in it. Lower alcohol % and was a nice after dinner drink.

I think the reason we never really see the top shelf Tequilas that are not set up for mass production is the makers would be unable to keep up with demand. I have friends in San Diego who are always picking up some unknown gem and bringing it back with them. Some were bought from the maker directly too.

I am relating some of the great wines we are making in BC now. You'll never see most of them in BC Liquor Stores because some only bottle 400 - 1000 cases per year. The makers can sell those off via wine clubs and small private wine stores easy enough.

I'm thinking the same applies to small Tequila makers too.

So many of the wineries have restaurants/gift shops that attract tourists through tours now, I bet they can sell out that way quite easily.
