Driving thru the downtown east side Sunday I saw an obviously pregnant (bare belly), young Native woman doing the crack dance at the side of the street and trying to attract drivers to her "charms". I suppose under our Right To Do Anything laws there is nothing pre-emptive authorities can do to help her or her fetus, who will undoubtedly be born addicted and with who knows what impairments. This child will have almost no chance of a normal life and will most likely end up a drain on the state as well. And so it goes. So sad.
PS - Anyone who is sick enough to pick up this girl is a sick fuck who is only doing her and her baby harm.

Admiration

You two ladies are amazing. Not whining about how other people should change to appease with our sensibilities, but actualy helping them. I'm awed.

I've seen addicted babies fighting to stay alive when born addicted and it's not a pleasant sight. They can't even tolerate light and the slightest sounds send them into reactive spasms. Even if you don't care about yourself, it's unbelievable a woman wouldn't try her damndest to get straight when she found out she was pregnant.

Babies born addicted to drugs have the benefit of early life memory loss, and likely won't be affected adversely later in life from a pre birth drug addiction.

So on a lighter note, where does she hang out, rates, reviews? Just kidding. :)

Hard to judge if you have not walked a mile in their shoes darling.
Yes, she was born with the short end of the stick. :( Every day of her life she was beaten down. :(
Get well soon. :(

I am sorry. I think that any woman who allows herself to become pregnate while addicted to drugs and/or booze, should be prosecuted for child abuse.

My SO was born to a drunk and even though she is now in her 50's she is still suffering physically and mentally.

Just think about that unborn child going through 50 plus years of pain and suffering.

I belive that any individual should be able to ingest inthing into their body without fear of arrest. However being pregnate every thing you ingest is also ingested by the fetus. Its as if you were to hld some down and shoot them up with drugs.

As long as it's her choice to be pregnant - and it IS her choice regardless of how she got that way, then it's her RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that she provides her unborn child a good and healthy start. My heart does NOT bleed for those who bring crack babies into this world....whoever stated that it's not likely that the child will suffer beyond childhood for this woman's actions was dead wrong. The list of long term negative ramifications is seemingly endless.

Put me on "ignore" if you must. I have seen enough DT and the same chiks everytime to know some people don't want help.

So you tell me, if she doesn't want help, collects her meager sum from the govie each month, never plans on working, buys drugs and brings crack babies into the world....then what good is she??

We may all be equal is god's eyes, but fortunately, or unfortunately down here on earth in the 21st century we have rules and definitions on who is a contributing and non contributing member of society.

I make no appologies for my statement.

Her whole world.

Well she doesn't have a lot of options in her life, she might feel alienated by the help agencies so her whole world might consist of drug guy number one or booze guy number two. No way out and just live for the moment, even if she can't see further than a few hours in front of her. Meal to meal, high to high.
It takes a phenomenal amount of patience and tolerance to work in that field as a non judgemental social worker.

Bad trees produce bad fruit. Good trees produce good fruit. If you treat each tree in your garden with love and compasion, then even the bad tree will eventually produce a good fruit.

Now this woman may not be societies golden child at this stage of her life, but with some love and compasion, perhaps she can turn it around.

~Nice metaphor Static. My 2 cents worth, deviance is not only expressed by extravorted personas. As long as we stay limited in our own understandings of situations, poverty will always link to crime. Marginilised people will always link to a class of lesser value. Some people choose a slow death to ride out and see where deaths door will open. I agree on one hand in my tendacy to be a fencepost sitter. No excuse for the pregnancy. There must be plenty of agencies to help with those kind of situations. Job creation anyone.

All,

I'm not from Vancouver but visit frequently. Under the circumstances it would seem appropriate to provide some financial support to a worthy organization, for the benefit of the children, the moms and those of us who might prefer for these things to confront us less often. Suggestions, please?

Hemmingway:

How about an organization to provide at no cost, long term birth control for any addicted woman. If an addict does become pregnant a free safe abortion and then long term birth control until she is clean.

HFS

Not only do I live with a lady that was born to a drunk (She was accepted as a member of the middle class and only thought that the street was to drive on) but my adult daughter provided a foster home to at risk newborns (read addicted). for 10 years.

In the case of one woman who was a crack ho, 4 in 4 years. None of those children will ever be normal nor will they ever be able to be a functioning member of the community. Even at 8 years of age and no drugs, any bright light or loud noise sends them into shock. Even though they are placed in special classes, they have a great difficulty learning as it seems they have an extreamly short attention span. The studies show, that even while shortly after birth they are cleaned up and are not addicted, the have a 5 times greater probability of becoming an addict.

How can anyone defend the actions of a woman that would do this to her child.

DWB,

I wasn't defending the woman's actions......I was pretty clear in my comments that the mother to be needs to be dealt with in some way. My point was that I don't think this belongs to the courts....or at least not the initial steps that need to be taken to help the unborn child.

HFS
I don't think pregnant women need to be criminalized for their addiction but I agree they need to be dealt with. If the woman won't stop causing harm to the fetus she needs to be detained and prevented from harming the baby. You can't make a heroin user stop cold turkey but there is no reason why they can't go on methadone which is far less harmful to the baby. If they don't do this voluntarily they need to be locked up and forced onto the program. If they won't stop drinking, take them out of the environment where they have access to alcohol. If the woman won't get treatment for her addiction and won't submit to a long term birth control program and keeps getting pregnant maybe she does need to face criminal charges.

A pregnant woman is just as responsible for the harm her actions cause her baby as an alcoholic or drug addict who choses to drive and ends up harming someone else is. Addiction isn't a convienient excuse for not taking responsibility for your actions. If you don't hold pregnant addicts responsible for their actions how can we hold all the other addicts out there responsible for theirs.

who sets the benchmark in determining an individual’s contributory status to society? Who evaluates the status within that benchmark? Who’s ready to pull the life switch on those not meeting that benchmark?

So....for all the PERBERT's who thought I was nothing but a rightwing, redneck, gas guzzle truck driving, gun toting, George W Bush/Stephan Harper supporting asshole
Hey, isn’t that the definition of a Compassionate Conservative?
