$100.00 tire or $500.00 tire, it don't make a difference if you don't know how to drive in snow. I love the guys/gals sitting in the ditch going on about how expensive their snow tires are, and how this shouldn't have happened.

What is really funny is when you see a big ass SUV with 4 wheel drive in the ditch..= idiot that thinks 4 wheel drive means invincibility VS weather conditions.

I think many people who have accidents in snow don't realize that although you may be able to accelerate and take corners well with AWD...braking is the same no matter how many wheel drive you have.

To get snow tires or not to get snow tires--that is the question, Prince Hamlet . . .
Just remember, they don't have them in brown...........................

If you're going to use winter tires you realistically have two options either Michelin or Nokian.

So, it's snowing! What to do? I've a front wheel drive and I kind of felt it losing traction a couple of times. I saw chains on Canadian Tire. Are they any good? What about snow tires? What to get?

I checked TireTrack.com and it showed me 14 results for my car but not sure which ones to get.

And whats the difference between studdable, studless tires? And what are these damn chains for?

Here are the search results:

magicmystery: Forget chains....they're only for use in EXTREME circumstances...definitely NOT for regular use...

With the choices shown - I'd recommend either the blizzaks or the X-Ice tires. In my opinion the modern winter tires no longer have a need for being studdable.
The current tread patterns/rubber compounds are truly exceptional.
I'd also recommend checking out a Kal Tire if you have one close. They carry the Nokian brand and they are my first choice

Also - check shipping rates from Tire Rack - they can be quite high to Canada.

Oh! I thought you could get either chain or snow tire. I thought chain would be easy to put on/off. Thanks for letting me know :)

So, the cheaper Dunlop ones, and Pirelli ones are not good then?

Okay, but which model of Nokian? I did a quick google search and it seems Nokian snow tires are close to $200 each.

One more question: do I also need to buy wheels? If so, where can I buy them cheap? And who can install for me? (I don't have any car tools other than emergency jack that came with it, and jumper cable). This is turning out to be quite expensive $600 for tires alone, and then another $600 (just guessing) for wheels and another couple of under for installation?

Editing post to add this question:
I also saw a deal on Canadian Tire
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...SELL~0083531 Michelin+X-Ice+Xi2.jsp?locale=en
Goodyear Nordic
Product #03-1571-8
($52 per tire)
Are these good tires? Comparable to Mich X-Ice? Nokian? Would you recommend it? I generally drive in Vancouver and Burnaby area.

Thanks

How are these? http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...utoSelector_Tires_Size_205/55R16+_ViewDetails
It's costing me about $650 (with installation and taxes). Are these good? These are the cheapest ones I could find. I'd be driving in Vancouver/Burnaby area - not driving to Whistler or any place with really heavy snow for extended period.

I checked discount tire (lakeway exit, Bellingham) and the cheapest winter tire I can find there are also about $115.

I also saw Nexen winterguard 231 at Walmart for $93 a piece.

What's your advise?

I would highly recommend the Blizzak WS70. I have been using for the past 3 years on both my cars the outgoing model the WS60 and I have been very pleased with them. I put them on in November and then they go off in April. Modern snow tires like these ( not the no name brand generics that Canadian tire sells for cheap) are great all around tires that work not only in the snow/ice but in winter temperatures in the dry and rain. It is true that a decade ago snow tires were one purpose only with poor handling and extreme wear in normal winter driving conditions without snow or ice. But these new generation tires are called "winter tires" and they behave close to a normal all season tire with the benefit of be able to handle extreme conditions. I used to work in Burnaby and I would take the back unplowed roads to avoid the slipping and sliding cars on the main roads. I was safer and my traction control did not even come up once going up hill on 10 cm of snow... I bought my sets for 2 cars from tirerack complete with rims and have been extremely happy with them.
