I am getting 30 spams a day, fucking nothing i know is effective against spam!!!! Yes, there are junk mail filters, but the problem is it takes a few min to download all the e-mails every time I check my mail and there always a risk of good e-mails been mistakenly identify as junk mail. Why am I wasting 5 min of my precious time everyday for those fucking spammers...

Anyone has any effective tip to share ?

Change your email address...

Once those cockroaches have your addy, you are doomed, unless you raise your filter level, which will also plunk legit ones into your junk mail folder. Hanging on to your existing addy is not a matter of life and death, and you can easily notify the parties you wish to maintain contacts with.

I use a program called spam inspector, it will automatic filter your mail and also either block by user name and domain name. If you want you can report the domain names and they will be add to a block list that ISPs use to try and control spamming.

Some ISPs (eg. Interbaun in Edmonton) use a free spam filter for customers called Postini. I've found it's about 98-99% accurate in terms of correctly identifying junk while preserving legit e-mails. It sometimes misidentifies web-based e-mail like yahoo.com and hotmail.com e-mails as junk, but there is a user option where you can add your friends to an approved list. I highly recommend using an ISP with Postini if one is available in your area.

Maury's tip is a good one as well. I'd recommend using one e-mail address for your business and personal life, and then creating a hotmail or yahoo address to use when registering on any suspect web sites (eg., porn, free download sites). Those sites are notorious for spam.

I know, I have mutiple e-mail adress for multiple purpose. The one thats getting all the junk mail lately, is unfortunately the one that I use to contact my personal friends/relatives. Its my [first name]@shaw.ca and I dont really want to give it up...

Shaw does have a junk mail filter, but the thing is it doesnt let you have a safe list...I have some business associate who e-mails me important information to my personal mail box once in a while. I dont want those to be mistakenly removed....

argh!!!!!!

THIRTY???? thats nothing... I have 100-140 a day. I have number of same addresses since I started on the net, and I cannot change them.

Use MailWasher. www.mailwasher.net
Great program, easy to use, downloads only header and first 200 lines (or as much as you want). You can open messages in text mode, so the hidden links inside message are not activated. You can bounce messages back, add addresses to black or white lists, or report it.
After a week away from the office, ( close to 1k messages waiting )takes me about 5 minutes to clean it. LOVE IT

Do not ever click on those "follow this link to be removed from this mail list" links at the bottom of the spams. Doing this lets the spammer know that your email addy is active and that's when the real problems start.
