Saw this hilarious, sad play last night that speaks to many (most?) long-term married couples' reality—and makes me glad to be a pooner!
“Sexy Laundry” is about Alice & Henry, veterans of a 25-yr marriage, who rent a hotel room for the weekend in an attempt to resurrect their sex life, with the help of a book called “Sex For Dummies.”
They manage to lacerate each other’s emotional sore spots, and endlessly miscommunicate, while pathetically failing to reignite the spark. They depict the way people typically cut off part of themselves—especially the non-monogamous part—to fit the mold of each other’s (and society’s) expectations of respectable married life.
The actors—Janet Michael & Gerry Mackay—put in a gripping, authentic performance. I was totally drawn in, and so was my companion. Seeing this play reinforced my commitment not to let social taboos stop me from creating the richest possible erotic life for myself, and to live out all my kinky fantasies (involving consenting adults).
Even nowadays I think it still takes courage to put on this sort of play in which actors frolic around in lingerie and use the term “fuck” prominently—especially in a place full of sexually conservative ethnic groups like Richmond.
Interestingly, there were only 3 Chinese people among an audience of about 100. I suspect the topic of "marriage gone stale" is just too painful for most of them to face up to, and they don't allow themselves even to become conscious that things could be different.
