Here is the resolution: (https://www.halifax2018.com/subdomain/policy-resolutions/end/node/2764)

Decriminalization of Consensual Sex Work and Sex Trade (#2764)
Justice

WHEREAS:

the current Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, which prohibits the purchasing of sex, does little to protect sex workers and instead pushes them to work underground and in dangerous conditions;
the current prohibition of buying consensual sex work does not address the underlying issues that make sex work dangerous, but rather creates a climate that makes sex workers unlikely to work with the police and be involved with more serious crimes;
BE IT RESOLVED the Liberal Party of Canada repeal the 2014 Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, begin a consultation period with those in the sex work industry and advocacy groups, and move to decriminalize consensual sex work, and the purchase of said sex work, for those over the age of 18;
BE IT RESOLVED the Liberal Party of Canada consult not just with those involved in the sex work, but with surrounding communities to ensure that these changes ensure the safety and wellbeing of these surrounding communities and their families;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that along with decriminalization the Liberal Party of Canada should look to address the true problems facing sex workers by working to increase their access to sexual health clinics, counseling and improve their relationship with local authorities.

some of this still seems a little based on the "all sex workers are victims" rhetoric....but hey....at least they seem to have the solution right!!

To be honest...this is simply a no-win issue for the Liberals.

They have a lot on their plate already.

Average Canadian is worried, very worried. Interest rates are going up, a lot of Canadians could lose everything from a few point increase.
Sex trade is not their priority when they are worried about losing their house or job.

agreed, i would argue that this actually bodes well for us......just that people may not care enough to kick up a stink.....i am holding out hope for reason to prevail and for the government to honor it's promise to create evidence based policy....

It would be great if they did Susie. Given the Liberal track record on promises, I wouldn’t hold your breath either.

I very much doubt that Mr. Trudeau would be willing to expend political capital on the issue of prostitution. If he has ever stated an opinion on the matter in public, I missed it. I suspect, though, that he subscribes to the "prostitutes as victims" and "clients as abusers" view.

I think that in the minds of most Canadians the issue went away with the passage of the Conservative legislation. There is no political benefit for Mr. Trudeau in reviving it.

so, last spring people might remember that there was a criminal justice reform round table which went across the country and was initiated by the liberals....we went and testified..... these new policy platforms were adopted by the liberal party and are open for debate or input from liberal party members right now.....

so while i understand that people don't see the benefit to trudeau in reviving or re examining this issue, let's not forget the new ndp platform actually goes alot further than this....so i feel like this is important to the liberals in terms of the next election.....

they won by being the party who were open to real solutions on pot and sex work and mandatory minimums etc.

you guys really know how to take the wind out of a ladies sails...damn.....if i remember correctly, people didn't believe the city of vancouver or vpd would honor non enforcment either.....

because of the current focus on violence against women - not all sex workers are women i know - and the missing women etc and combined with murders of sex workers in places where enforcement is high and the no murders of sex workers in vancouver for 9 years under default decriminalization....i feel like this is exactly the time for the liberals to change the law....

there is significant pressure to do something on criminal justice reform especially after herr harper and the implementation of all the horrible conservative laws in this area and the impacts those laws are bringing upon poor and marginalized people

so, i guess we will have to wait and see yet again but i hope you guys are wrong and that they actually follow through...

susi, I admire your work, persistence, and upbeat attitude. I know that you have been instrumental in a lot of improvements for sex workers and their clients. I hope that you are right this time.

They made the official announcement to the media that C36 would be a topic of discussion at the Liberal conference in April. We’ll have to wait for April to see what happens.

Was it a top priority for the average citizen in Australia and other countries where they legalized the sex trade? You could also argue that it was no-win issue for the Australian government but they did legalize it without being forced by courts.
