after last week's CFL game where Montreal Alouettes beat B.C. Lions 39-38 with 3rd string QB Tanner Marsh leading the way,the always outspoken Als' WR,
Arland Bruce,an Afro-American, called Marsh his "Favorite White Boy."

this comment caused nary a ripple, nor should it.

however, picture for a moment, the outcome had Marsh said of Bruce, "My favorite Black Boy."

the self-righteous braying of the PC lunatic fringe would be heard from coast to coast.
at the very least, Marsh would be forced into some form of "sensitivity training" classes
to expunge his guilt.

yet, when Bruce made his remark, the silence was deafening.

makes one wonder if only whites are capable of racist comment?

"My favorite Black Boy."
I think it has to do with "boy"
I don't know a whole lot about race relations in the US but I have heard that the word "boy" was historically used negatively toward African Americans, esp in the south.

From wiki: "Historically, in countries such as the U.S. and South Africa, "boy" was not only a 'neutral' term for domestics but also used as a disparaging racist insult towards men of colour (especially of African descent), recalling their subservient status even after the 20th century legal emancipation (from slavery, evolved to race segregation, viz. Apartheid) and alleged infantility, and many still consider it offensive in that context to this day since it denotes that men of colour (especially of African descent) are less than men."

So yeah, some African Americans still take offense to the term "boy"

I think it's pretty easy for us non-slave-decended folk up here to say that sounds petty or silly, but we haven't walked a mile in those shoes.

I read it Fri morn, can't recall if it was Sun or Province, but what I read said "Favorite White Boy", not QB.

If you heard him say QB in an interview that is fine, maybe he said"fav qb" to one reporter& "fav boy" to another.

It is hard for me to think he was mis-quoted,I doubt a writer would print that without being 100%.

note to Emmanuelle....few mos back I was watching a Jean Harlow film on TCM.

She's in a horse&buggy "taxi" and the driver is a young black man.

As she gets out she says something like, "I'll be just a few minutes, boy."
Now, it was not said in a condescending tone, no more than one would say "Waiter" in a restaurant,
or "Miss" in a store.
I was gobsmacked cuz I agree with your comments.
I thought about it,the film was from the 30's, that's the way it was.

those TCM movies, while rightly called classics, can be cringeworthy when the only black castmembers are servants, railway porters, etc.

Will You White Crackers Please Stop Whining for the Love of God

The tragic shooting death of Trayvon Martin continues to be one of America's richest sources of tangentially-related arguments. The latest: Is "cracker" a "racial" term? The correct answer: Shut up, cracker.

In the trial of George Zimmerman, the Florida man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, witness Rachel Jeantel testified that Martin told her that a "creepy-ass cracker" (Zimmerman) was following him shortly before he was killed. Under grilling from Zimmerman's attorney, Jeantel said that she did not think that "cracker" was a "racial" remark, or an offensive one, or, really, a big deal. Now, the question of whether or not "cracker" is "racial" is being reported on as an issue of great importance. As a born-and-raised Southerner— and a cracker— I feel qualified to offer some insight to those who may be confused by this thorny sociological quandary.

Is "cracker" a "racial" term? Yes, it means "white person." Therefore it is "racial."

Is "cracker" an offensive term? Well, let's put it this way: if you are the type of white person who is greatly offended by being called a "cracker," you can always take heart in the knowledge that the Confederacy went down fighting bravely. They'll never take that away from you, by god.

Is "cracker" a real live racial slur, just as despicable as all the other racial slurs? A racial slur? Sure, technically speaking. A real racial slur? Sadly, no. There are no good racial slurs for white people. Despite the fact that white Americans have committed far more atrocities against the other races of the world than all of those races combined have committed against white people, there is no one single slur in popular usage that can really cut a white person to their soft, marshmallowy core. It's tragic, really. A corollary of this fact is the fact that white people who complain loudly about "racial slurs" like "cracker" are "pussies."

Does the philosophical question of whether or not "cracker" is a "racial" term have any real bearing whatsoever on whether or not Trayvon Martin deserved to be shot and killed? No.

Hey, how come nobody makes a big deal when a black person says "cracker," but I lose all my endorsement deals just for calling black people.... Hold it right there, whitey. It boggles the mind to know that this question is still so fervently discussed in internet comment sections and in the stands of Ole Miss football games, and yet is one of the single most god damn ignorant questions that could ever be formulated by a white resident of the United States of America. The reason you're looking for, cracker, is "the history of the United States of America." Look it up. You can figure it out if you really, really try. I mean, lord almighty, you'd think that this whole discussion would have been laid to rest years ago just by Chris Rock routines alone, but no. Fucking whiny crackers will not stop whining like little babies no matter how fucking good they have it.

Shut up, nilla.

I watch a lot of old classic movies and I'm always shocked by what was considered normal back then.
The cartoons back then were even more blunt.

Though at the same time I am personally outraged that these cartoons and others like them got yanked from TV starting at about 1980.Whilst they are pretty bad they are still funny but got yanked due to the ever growing sentiment towards the fucked up stupidity of political correctness.

Like in Pink Floyd "The Wall" when Pink is losing his mind in the hotel room and there's an old WW2 movie on the TV.
2 Brits are outside with a Black lab and then one of them says to the dog "Come along now Nigger…”
I have watched The Wall many times and listened to the album far more and I have never heard "old nigger" but rather "old digger" so I think you are mistaken.

From the Piper at the gates at dawn to the Division Bell I do not recall or think of ANY type of racist lyric in ANY Pink Floyd song and as a fan of Pink Floyd I dont like your statement and I thing you need to clear out your ears.

Lucky for you I’m not a complete prick that just goes around looking for ways to slight people, consider this educational.

Having the advantage of living in Japan, I have become accustomed to using “mimikaki”

Perhaps you should consider diverting some of your pooning fund to purchase one.
I dont have a "pooning" fund.....I spend my plethora of hard earned income on what I like....as for your references to living in Japan and all that you blather I highly doubt you would escape the watchfull eye of a well educatated/trained Metsuke if you visited Japan before the country flushed it's traditions down the toilet and adapted to western society.

The title makes me laugh:pound: There's still plenty of racism to go around. All you have to do is go to Alberta and Saskatchewan to witness it. I've worked in both of those provinces and the level of condesention is astounding. The funniest question I ever got in Alberta was from a young lady in Edmonton, she asked me if I had a job? When I said yes, her next question was "Oh what kind of job? sweeper?"

Referring to a grown man as "boy" is generally taken to be derogatory no matter who says it (curiously, this doesn't seem to apply to grown women being referred to as a "girl").

Preface it with "white" it becomes a racial derogatory statement, so it is racist.

on yer ignore list
i'm not too sure about the validity of a lot of statements made in this thread, but beggin' yer pardon...

i refer to most of my close buddies (mostly white), as 'good ole boys' and not one of them takes offence

as for us 'non-slave descended folks' well, was not serfdom a form of slavery? i mean to the best of my knowledge serfs could be bought and sold, and i'm sure if we went back far enough, we would find MANY more than a few serfs in our family trees

the difference is, our ancestors fought for the right to own property, the right of free speech, the right of universal suffrage, the right to be free...

while others did not

call it luck of birth or whatever you want, but once having achieved that freedom, we have achieved the right to NOT be offended by names based on our race...

while others did not

call me racist - i love it... :high5:

When it stops being "special" to eat Chinese or Indian food ....

When it stops being common for Barbie dolls to be predominantly white (they were once all white) ....

When the ruling class of hispanic countries, which are overwhelmingly aboriginal in its citizenship, stop being European....

When the malls are filled with black and asian and brown mannequins .....

When Hollywood stops exporting movies with white men as the heroes, and white women as the standard of beauty, .....

When it's not a humongous deal that there is a black president, when such a president doesn't feel like if he made one mistake (like Bill Clinton) it would be a complete disaster for his own people, when everything he does isn't examined ten thousand ways, when even there are no more questions about his religion or where he was born, all because he's black ......

When you're Asian and you're automatically expected to be an accountant, a computer nerd, and being a sex symbol is the exception ....

When you're Black and you're automatically expected to be a career athlete, or it's a big surprise that you're a lawyer or a doctor, or that you're more virile than others ...

When you're a Black child and you actually have to be told you can be anything you want to be ....

So yeah, "white boy" is racist. The world was made in your image, you don't have to put up with never-ending comparisons between yourself and the world around you. So when you get a little taste of your own medicine, go cry your little hearts out.

glad(and surprised) you agree that "white boy" is racist.

btw, most of your apologetic scenarios are out of date.

eg check the leaders of Latin American countries and you'll find some are native or mestiszo(sp?)

what's wrong with eating "special" food?fyi, there are culinary delights out there,it is not a bad idea to take a break from your peanut butter&jelly sandwiches.

one last thing....check a calendar,it's 2013....you seem stuck in an earlier age.
