Sea to Sky Gondola cables intentionally cut

I keep an annual pass, and every out of town visitor I bring up there always enjoys the experience. I was so shocked to hear about the collapse this morning. So upsetting to learn that some sick nut job would cause I’m guessing millions in combined lost revenues and damages, about a hundred people to be temporarily unemployed, and worst of all instill fear in the staff and guests alike moving forward. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but I hope whoever did this gets at least 10 years in prison! Whatever the motive may have been, this is borderline terrorism if you ask me.

You can get a cordless grinder at Canadian tire for $100, that with the right wheel would cut through that cable in seconds.
Sounds like insurance fraud to me....
That operation makes serious bank, and it’ll never be business as usual again but who knows.

Varies now
10 years is squat for that .DEATH !! Grow some balls Canada !!
Noise at 4 AM for a grinder , Im saying melting Gauss of Magnetic power , set a time up on the tower , get it to come on with tool in place when the machine is shut down . Go up for the last time , and install the heater around the cable / wire rope , heater is powered when the timer comes on & the cable melts as it's being pulled from weight .

Where were you Friday night?

That makes no sense whatsoever. Destroying, usually by fire, an old car or old building for the insurance $$ is understandable, but why would anyone do it to a new and financially thriving business? They'll lose money while closed and end up with equipment when repaired that is in almost exactly the same condition as that which was wrecked. Ridiculous supposition.

This is defamation. I hope you're at least hiding behind a VPN.

Defamation, and really stupid speculation. The place does most of their business during the summer, and and they're doing so well they recently added more cars. Plus, the insuance payment will never cover loss of future revenue because fear will inevitably keep some people away. Their business will be harmed for years to come.

Suspect that a percentage of population believe that destroying property is beneficial to the economy, stimulating job growth, much as war. That however, is a transfer of wealth that could be directed to worthy endeavour that preserved the original cable. The cable probably isn't even made in Canada let alone in British Columbia. Just another imported consumer item to upset balance of trade and indebt the British Columbia economy.

The wire rope will be spliced back together , that is done all the time .
Grouse mountain old Gondola cables for cargo had so many over the years .

I have watched them doing the splice and if there is a good crew , there quit quick at it.

Even if the gondola could be up and running tomorrow with all of the cabins fixed, the process of reopening will not likely begin for some time. Best case scenario the police catch the perpetrator(s) soon and the POS pleads guilty so people at least know what happened and why. That aside, it’ll be hard to get people back on the lift not knowing who brought it down and why. They’re obviously going to need WAY MORE security(possibly a man at each tower or make the towers themselves resistant to intruders?) moving forward. I love going up there and this act that has put hundreds out of work and cast a dark cloud over not only this attraction, but tourism in B.C. too upsets me in so many ways. I really hope they throw the book at whoever had anything to do with this.

So, there's a motive. Keeping a skilled crew around. I'd guess that you'd even find some new members on the splicing crew that need training before experienced members of the crew retire. Seen the same evidence while I walking around the Stanley Park seawall promenade Sunday morning. A section of wall west of Lumberman's Arch is being replaced. I don't have to be a graduate in civil engineering to see that there's nothing wrong with the old section of wall. But the replacement work in progress, placement of rebars etc., looks complex and not some skill that you'd pick up in a trade school. Likewise, I'd put a gentleman's bet on finding a mixed crew of older folk nearing retirement and youngsters if I had gone back Monday morning.

My guess would be a disgruntled former employee.
Haven't been around long enough to have disgruntled former employees....they have a pretty good pay scale and benefits. Working conditions are pretty good as well...with the employment situation being what it is in Squamish not a lot of people are going to bail on that job.

With the number of weddings being cancelled, I'd put my money on a pissed off ex.....

The idea of doing something like this and causing so much damage to the infrastucture not to mention the financial hardship not only to the company but also to the employees makes no sense to me.I cant fathom why a person would do this.

Environmental Impact of Ski Resorts

I hope they go bankrupt. Ski resorts are a environmental hazard. They are a disturbance to wildlife, deforest land, use up water when they make artificial snow and maintenance operations waist energy along with all the fossil fuel burnt by people driving to the resort.

If the damage was eco-terrorism, this is an example of the lack of intelligence behind them.

Unless it's just intentional trolling for he sake of being ignorant.
