Sure you can spend a lot more on different blends like Johnny Walker Blue Label.

In my opinion, the nicest Single Malt Whisky is Oban 14 year old. Very smooth, flavourful beginning to end and is not over the top in peatiness. If I am having a special evening, I pull out the Oban from the very back of my liquor cabinet. ;)

$125 at BC Liquor Stores.

i don't cross the $100 threshold. i love a good sipper but like my scotch to be drinkable too, without a prompting a visit from my inner accountant if i've had more than 1 serving.

my current a-listers are:

an'cnoc
aberlour 12 year

i asked santa for a bottle of auchentoshan 3 wood but no joy this year.

My all time favourite is Glenmorangie.
Agreed. It's the choice of the Highlander!
Though I have to admit that Talisker is growing on me.

"Good" will depend entirely upon the person drinking it. What scotch does the intended recipient currently consider a favorite? Knowing that, we can perhaps suggest something with a similar taste profile.

The aforementioned Oban IS very nice. Truely a smooth scotch and for a time, one of my favorites. However, more recently, I've been drawn to a bit more peat.
Glenmorangie is also quite fine, especially the Quinta Ruban, but I dind't like the Nector D'or.

Possibly difficult to find, but I sampled a Stronachie: A Little bolder, and mildly peaty, but very satisfying. Being slightly more rare, and very good (IMO), this might be well received.

So it's a whiskey, but Peat Monster is yummy ;)
Haha, I tried that one recently too. I have been a big fan of some of peaty Whisky's for years but they are not to everyone's liking. I put forth the Oban because of its smooth taste and other highlights rather than something like Lagavulin my ATF peaty Whisky.

Oh and FWIW I was always taught that the Irish have an "E" in their Whiskey while the Scots do not

Whiskey/whisky nmemonics:
Here’s a quick way to remember how some of the world’s biggest producers spell their products:

Countries that have E’s in their names (UnitEd StatEs and IrEland) tend to spell it whiskEy (plural whiskeys)
Countries without E’s in their names (Canada, Scotland, and Japan) spell it whisky (plural whiskies)

Good point the preferred scotch of choice of the recipient is
Glenlivet or Macallan

I thought I would throw this out there too -

Cask Strength Whisky ie 60.5% alcohol which needs to be cut with some water or ice cubes. Otherwise, at least in my case, my eyes would roll back in their sockets if I drank this stuff neat.

If you think about this one its $95 a bottle but since you need to cut it with water if becomes much more economical. Bonus is its very tasty too!

Touche! Yes, it's "whisky"... my bad, bad bad boy... you might just have to spank me for that ;)

I'm not a whisky/scotch aficianado so really my advice on this topic only comes from a few whisky tasting parties I've been to... can't really handle the stuff, I stuck to my wine and took little sips and sniffs.

Well, since both Glenlivet or Macallan are Speyside, you'd probably best stick with others from that region as a safe bet.

Macallan does offer a Ruby, which I haven't tried, but is well reviewed.
Linkwood has a couple available locally but they're a bit over your budget. (I've heard great things, but have not tried them.

I once had a bottle of Glendiffich 21 that was top shelf, but I can't see it on the BC Liquor site list. Closest is the 18, which is fair.
I was going to also suggest the Balvenie 17, but looks like only the 14 is available (good though)

Some of the liquor stores have people that are very knowledgeable in Scotches - I've had great luck describing what I've enjoyed and then listening to their suggestions.

oh - and maybe buy him some Glencairn glasses if he doesn't have them already. A proper glass is essential.

And, yes - badbadboy's suggestion of the Aberlour is valid and worth considering.

The pleasure of course will all be mine Claire

Macallan 18 yr.
I've never bought a bottle of that one primarily based on cost. I did try a wee dram in a whisky bar in the USA. It was definitely an aha moment for me.

It's just under the Price Tag Natalia requested at $299.95

Thanks for the suggestions!
A few friends put money together to get a friend a gift, hence the weird amount we want to spend!
We know nothing about scotch, so I thought this was the perfect place to ask! :clap2:

One of my favorite topics. I'm just back from a visit to Scotland made purely to visit distilleries. For me Islay malts are where its at, the regions are quite distinctive. If he's a Macallan man go with Macallan or I believe I saw an 18 year old Highland park suggested. A lovey drink along the lines of Macallan. Another option and also regionally a Speyside malt like macallan is Glenrothes, it won't cost you 300 and is a very pleasant summertime whisky.

haha too funny. Perbites are knowledgable about all vices. If you think about it, its quite true

You and your friends are doing a very nice thing since not many people could or would justify spending that amount on a bottle of whisky.

A very nice scotch whiskey at a reasonable price is Aberfeldy 12. Make sure you drink scotch with a true crystal glass!
