Schadenfreude & Why you should never use you work email when booking SPs.

I was chatting with a friend the other day on the lack of common sense some people display and I thought I'd post about a funny (to me at least) incident that happened shortly after going indy.

I used to get these vulgar emails from a man that I always ignored. Generally they included graphic details of what he wanted to do with me, asking how much for this and that, and were just generally gross. He'd always close by saying that this was his work email account and under no circumstances should I ever reply to him via email, and to call him at such and such a time and say my name was so and so.

I never responded and just ignored him, and of course his emails got more frantic and derogatory.

In the early spring I went on tour and left my auto-responder on. I happened to check it one day and almost fell off my chair laughing at the karmic justice.

"Buddy"'s email:
[Usual vulgar content including some nasty names directed at me because I wouldn't get back to him]

My auto-response:
I'm out of town and unavailable.... blah blah blah. ***EDIT** It also included a copy of his email to me.

Buddy's auto-response:
Buddy Smith is away on holidays until .... all of his emails will be forwarded to his manager... blah blah blah.

Funny.... I never heard from him again. I wonder why

Lesson:
Don't use your work or home email or phone number EVER unless it's safe for someone to reply at any given moment  And always be polite :)

Under normal circumstances I would feel horrible that my auto-reply was sent to his boss, but in this case his emails were so vile that I can't say I feel too sorry for him.

I guess I should mention that my auto-reply included his vulgar email to me so it was a double whammy when it landed in his boss's inbox.

If he was told to stop but did not, then he got exactly what he deserved, but in this case he was never told that his actions were unwanted, just no replies then an autoresponse. He was infactuated with a woman that wouldn't even respond to say, "Leave Me Alone".

For insulting you in his last email, he is an ass, but come on, funny? I'm guessing that he lost his job, is seen as a perv for contacting an SP and who knows what other fall-out that may affect him for the rest of his life.

Obviously not II's fault, but I don't find it funny, nor do I believe that karma has been served.

Well my site and all my ads were very clear that all communication was email only and that I do not answer rude, vulgar or explcit emails

He'd always close by saying that this was his work email account and under no circumstances should I ever reply to him via email, and to call him at such and such a time and say my name was so and so.
He knew I only communicated via email and wanted me to jump though a bunch of hoops for his amusement all while being incredibly vulgar and derogatory. We are talking 10+ emails in a 1-2 month period with no response.

If he'd been polite, I'd feel utterly terrible, I might even have called him to tell him he needs to set up a yahoo/gmail/hotmail account. But he wasn't polite, he was disgusting, started to call me a bitch (not just the last one) and somehow I'm going to want to see him with that kind of language?

Sorry sometimes karma really is funny.

Wondering..

Why'd you ever respond to him in the first place if he was being an ass?

Money isn't worth the danger you'd be placing yourself in with that kind of client.

He seems off the hook.

That was exactly why I never responded to him in the first place. The only response I got was when my auto-responder did it for me. This is why the karma of the auto-responder reply is funny.

*snicker*

I don't have much sympathy for "buddy". I've dealt with too many a-holes to have any patience for boorish behavior, whether it's through email or face-to-face.

I'm surprised he used a work email to make contact. Dumb dumb dumb.

In most companies, the IT department has full access to everyone's email. Majority of the time, they don't bother to monitor the email, sometimes they have filters set to flag emails for questionable content.

But you have no privacy rights when it comes to corporate email, and in order to cover your backside, you have to assume that every email you send will be read by your immediate manager.

Ahh, auto-responder, good call.

Wonder why the idiot kept trying to email you, oh well.

If a man can't respect you, and I mean any SP, it should set up warning lights all over the place.

Take care. :)

I'm just thinking of the residual fall out. Such as, he gets canned but has a wife and kids? They did nothing wrong, but the impact on them? Guys that get all desperate and say stupid shit out of frustration should have consequences, yes, but for being an ass I think the consequences could be potentially devestating. Karma, or even "An eye for an eye", dictates that someone annoy the sit out of him, no?

Lady Luck

Wow! The things you just never see coming. I sat at my home computer late one evening after a scotch or two beyond my limit. A stunning SP caught my blurry eye and, being a noobie at this, with retarded abondonment I sent her a message with my private email address through her site. I gave the evening no further thought and never heard from the girl.

About a month later I was out of town and had given my partner all my passwords etc. so she could keep on top of the many issues that define our daily lives. She's not a big tech girl.....

Now, when I say out of town, I mean really out of town. About three weeks in the northern wilderness many miles from any civilization. I had with me a small laptop with which I kept a diary. Its purpose was to log the events of my trip. I also knew I would occasionally pass through small towns and such and maybe find a wireless network with which to contact my home and friends.

About two weeks into the trip I stopped at a remote lodge that had a paper note stuck in the washroom that said "Wi-Fi available". It was late and I had had a gruelling although fantastic day and decided to check it out. First thing I did was check my emails. Holly Crap!

Sitting on my server, dated for that day, and still unopened, was a response from the SP. It was a very nice reply in which she apologized for being away for the past month and usually responds to her emails within a few days. She was terrific. Of course she had replied to my original message so that was also attached.

You can still feel the finger prints on my delete button...

OMG! Ya can just never tell when something is gonna jump up and bite ya on the ass. Thanks Lady Luck. I owe ya..

It's nice that you're thinking of the repercussions of his decisions and actions, because clearly he didn't give a flying f**k. Nor did he consider the feelings of the nameless sp he was attempting to "obscene email". Obscene phone calls aren't tolerated, why should these be?

He had plenty of opportunities to stop emailing her after the first couple did not receive replies, but chose to continue. He knew the consequences of sending discourteous emails, but chose to do so anyway. He also chose to email someone, who had yet to ever reply, shortly before handing over his work email to someone else. That's just stupid.

If he suffers consequences from this event, they were 1000% caused by his choices and actions. Cyber bullying and harrassment is a growing trend and if he loses his job because of his choices and actions, oh well.

I guess he won't do it again.

True enough and I guess he won't. Although he didn't give a flying fuck about his actions, my point was that people he is involved with may pay for his indescretions and that's too bad. My other point was that he is paying for his actions in spades. Rubbing it in seems a little much to me. Just my opinion though. Not saying I'm right.

The moral of this story is to never use your work e-mail for anything personal.

Work e-mails are often stored in the company's server and can be read by your boss, a company technician, or even your secretary.

I think part of the thrill for the moron was flirting with danger. His emails were lewd/derogatory and he stressed the fact that it was his work address...
