I am saying good bye to one of my dogs today. It totally wrecks me to write this but somehow I feel I have to get it out.

She has been my little buddy for nearly 13 years and I can not see her suffer anymore. I have provided every possible treatment, test, medication that is practical but in the end science can not save her again. I have to set her spirit free.

This past weekend she laid on my chest looking up at me with her big beautiful eyes and not sleeping as she normally would for many hours on end. I told her if she wanted to go, she could and I would ease her pain.

Being a true man's best friend, she was there for me in my darkest moments, when all hell was breaking out and when things were going well. Always greeting me with a wag, what I perceived was her smile and I would rub her under her chin.

I will never forget what this wonderful dog has done for me.

Good bye my dear little friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The right thing to do is rarely ever the easy thing to do, and it takes a lot of strength and selflessness to do what's best for your friend by releaving her of her suffering.
Hugs, love and positive vibes to you

Sorry for your loss.
I know you miss her tremendously right now.
During this time of sorrow, take the time to remember all the joy she brought to your life and believe in that the fact she would not want you to be sad.
With time your fond memories will turn your grief to happy remembrances.

I lay down with mine on the floor at the VET when they put him too sleep, feelings of immense guilt and relief at the same time, he was in so much pain ( Cancer )

Tears streamed down my face like a baby!

Yes, PC: I have done this too with my dear Cocoa...she was 15 and suffering from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, and my only regret was not being able to recognize sooner how badly she was suffering.

We had a vet come to our house last time and I think it was a lot less stressful for our dog. He was in his favourite spot on the sofa, with his favourite humans. Worth looking into for anyone in this situation.

I look at my big guy now and remember a saying: "I'm sad you can't be with me all my life, but I'm glad I was with you for all of yours."

So sorry to hear this BBB. It is truly one of the most difficult and sad things to go through. It can be harder than losing a family member as we have no negative memories toward our pets. Just the fact that you are sharing this goes to show how much you love her.

Westwoody makes a really good point. Lot's of vets will come to your home now. It makes it much less stressful for both of you if it's a possibility.

Warmest wishes to you at this terribly sad time.

bbb, I can't say it any better than the others who've written in this thread. I won't be so presumptuous as to pretend I know exactly how you feel, but I know how I will feel when that time comes, and I dread it.

It sounds like you're the sort who cherishes your dogs, so yours has had a good life and been one of the lucky ones. Be proud of that.

Sorry for your loss BBB. A dog becomes a crucial part of the family and it's never an easy thing saying goodbye. I know a few people myself who have lost pets and its one of those shitty things in life to endure. My condolences to you bud.

Sorry to hear about your loss BBB :( as someone who has recently had to do the same for my pug. This might not be the time for my suggestion but after a few weeks I went out on got a french bulldog and she has brought some new joy into life. :) Good luck and hugs.

Oh BBB, it is so sad and heart wrenching to hear that this has happened to you and your dear friend.

Words, support and condolences do sometimes ease the pain a little, but the biggest healer of all is 'time'.

May each day bring you a little more comfort and a little less pain, and be assured that the community's hopes and prayers are with you.

So sorry to hear and I know how you feel. Saying goodbye to a pet is very hard. You are doing the right thing to take care of your friend and have the strength to usher her out gently with a kind and loving hand. What more could an animal ask for?

It is sad to see them go but they just don't live as long as we do. I promised myself that I wouldn't let my pet suffer and I too had to do everything I could to provide care, medication and comfort... and decide when to let her go.

I remember my girlfriend at the time was very kind and understanding and had been through a similar experience. I expressed concern and worry about when I should stop treating her because I didn't want my pet to suffer. She just said "Shel'll let you know". And she did. Sounds like you were self-aware and empathetic enough to make the same wise choice.

Celebrate the life of your friend - and remember... all dogs go to heaven.

My condolences.
