At present the site is zoned for mixed commercial. It will be a while before the zoning is changed.
Of course two thoughts on potential redevelopment.

One being that this will give that particular area some new life and the other is does Vancouver need more human gerbil cages?

Whichever side you sit on, one thing that does ring true is "You can't stop what's coming down the road"

It is happening because it is unprofitable.

If you want to save it, speak with your money, not your voice.

Waldorf might make money if they didn't start catering to this hipsters. Sure they like to party but there's no massive rounds getting served there lol. Good chunk of penny pinchers in that crowd lol

Tear it down.. tear it all down. Love to see what happens next. The main rendering plant in Vancover is less than 1500 m from the back door of the Waldorf. Truly the Sickest smell in Vancouver. Million dollar condos until the wind blows south..lol then they won't be worth shit.
ah yes the famous stinkhouse. i had the displeasure of going in there once when i briefly worked for the railway, as they switch out cars. it is one of the worst smells i've ever experienced, and keep in mind i've had years of working with dead people so that's saying something.

i was a bartender there 15/20 years ago and even then the place was beyond renovating ! i'm surprised it has stayed open as long as it has! the owners did their best but with changing liquor licensing laws and fire dept regulations they could not utilise even 50% of the space that was designated for entertainment ! there is a whole other level below the pub which was for fine dining and dancing in the old days. but i dont think that has any bearing on the decision ....it is family owned and run by a brother and sister who are now wel;l past being senior citizens and they probably just want to retire and enjoy their remaining years but could not see their fathers hotel in the hands of strangers or see it become a rundown shabby skid row kind of place

In Lust Mostly
That whole neighbourhood needs a clean up and starting with the Waldorf might get some other investment in the area. Geez, its even creepy in the daytime and can't imagine what its like at night time.

My SO and her douchey artsy friends go there, I've never stepped foot in the shit hole and ITB said it smells like a cheap street ho's stench box. Tear the fucker down and find some idiots who are willing to go live there.

The people that want to keep it are the same crowd that go spend a night out in the bar and walk out with ten dollar bill!

Last I heard was that our douchey mayor plans on introducing a motion to prevent it from being torn down, apparently this idiot mayor of ours thinks that dive bars are "cultural venues". I hope he applies the same rationale to AMPs since they are places that encourage "ethnic diversification and immersion"

Remember, this is East Van we are talking about...it is probably one of very few cultural venues there. The place is a desolate wasteland :)
