I mean, WTF....and how do FOUR officials on the ice not see this?

LOS ANGELES -- In a game that featured just about everything, Sharks forward Ryane Clowe made a move no one had seen before.

Clowe was on the bench with about two minutes remaining in a tied game Thursday night when he stuck out his stick and nicked the puck away from Kings forward Jarret Stoll, disrupting a potential 3-on-2.

Although nearly everyone inside Staples Center seemed to witness the move, none of the officials saw what happened, and the game ventured into overtime and then a shootout. The Sharks ultimately prevailed 6-5 to stay in the hunt for the Pacific Division title.

"He definitely got the puck," Stoll said. "Who knows what would happen on the play, but nobody's ever seen anything like that."

As he sat in his locker stall following the game, Clowe claimed ignorance.

"I have no idea what you guys are talking about," he said. "I'll have to see the video or something; you'll have to show me on video."

Good chance the league will be reviewing the video as well.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter was in a surprisingly light mood afterward, possibly because his team had clinched a playoff berth earlier in the night when Dallas lost in Nashville. He said the play definitely should have warranted a penalty and was surprised the officials did not witness what occurred.

"I don't even know what that call is," he said. "Is it unsportsmanlike or too many men? It's got to be something."

Kings captain Dustin Brown reiterated similar disbelief that the deed went unpenalized by the officials.

"I'm not sure how all four of them missed it," he said. "I thought it was pretty evident, but when you're in the game, sometimes you aren't going to see everything. It is what it is; we can't sit there and dwell on it."

Drew Doughty had no doubt what he witnessed, as he was trailing Stoll on the play.

"I was right behind Stolly when the guy reached on the ice and touched the puck," he said. "There's no doubt he did. It's unfortunate that the refs missed it."

And like the others in the locker room, it was a first for Doughty. Not just as a player, but any game he has witnessed.

"It was shocking, to be honest," he said.

The teams will meet again for their regular-season finale Saturday in San Jose. The winner of that game could end up as the Pacific Division champion.

Whats up with Darryl Sutter these days? Those king players must have a lot of patience in order to listen to him speak for any length of time. I can't imagine what was said during his job interview for coach.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
The on ice officials in this case should also be fined/suspended.
I've said it before, since I started watching NHL again with the return of the Jets, NHL refereeing is the WORST! How do all the players, the announcers, most of the fans in attendance and those watching on TV see it but the officials say they saw nothing. It's not like it was a behind the play or a goal crease scrum. At least one ref is supposed to be watching the puck and puck carrier.
But in typical NHL fashion they'll come out with a statement claiming some lame ass excuse for their sorry refs.

As for Clowe, pretty smart play when you can get away with it.

You're right Badger but in a case like this they really didn't need the "extra" official. The play was made on the puck carrier. If at least one official isn't focused on the puck carrier where is he looking?

BTW, if after the game the ref's came out and said "Yes we blew it but I was too busy looking at the Brunette with the big tits behind the players bench." I could understand and respect that.

;)

Cheers

this points out something that the league is going to eventually have to come to grips with. with advances in technology, hd video is now possible and in some cases, like this one, the fans can see something happening that the officials can't (or don't or don't want to or whatever, lol). what to do about it?

in this case, if the officials HAD called it, it would have been a minor penalty, so fines or suspensions to the player are out of the question. i submit that these kinds of things happen all the time... players getting hit, tripped, checked from behind, high-sticked... heck, all those bruises and scrapes on the face don't appear out of thin air! but they appear with no penalty called

when an uncalled infraction goes viral like this, i'm sure there are phone calls made, and i'm sure a lot of people get spoken to quite sternly, including the refs, and i'm sure the offender gets watched very closely for a good number of games going forward (and is told as much so he's watching himself as well). i'm sure the league responds, we just don't hear about it

No different than a player taking a dive to bait a call from the ref. People are overreacting as usual. Clowe could say it was instinctual, and I would believe it. Sure he is a bonehead for saying he had no memory of the play, but not suspension worthy at all.
