Rubin gets all the glory, but who remembers the name of the young man convicted of being his accomplice because Carter was giving him a ride home from the club? John Artis was just as innocent. Just as black. Just as wrongfully convicted.

True, Artis was also convicted and also was set free before Carter.

Carter got the attention because he was a Middle Weight contender in his day.

Not to digress, this is an R I P thread.

You're correct, bbb. I mention John Artis because he moved into Carter's home when it was revealed that he had terminal prostate cancer, and was first to confirm that Rubin had passed away.

I knew the Rubin Carter story long before the Academy robbed Denzel of his Oscar in 1999. I read the book when it was newly released (I was a teenage girl who loved boxing...and most other televised sports!) Afterwards, I followed news stories about the Innocence Project's work on his behalf and I cried when I learned he'd been released from prison. Now, Rubin Carter is free again forever 'to ride a horse along the beach...'

Rest in Peace, Mr. Carter.
