rogers or telus

both Rogers and Fido have name display, so your name (the one that you sign up with) is displayed each time you call. And they won't take it off. You can only block your call, but that also blocks your number. So keep this in mind.
However, they will "modify" the display if you ask. I asked them to display my first name only. They said that there had to be at least one character displayed for the last name, so now my display is my first name followed by a period. So the phone's good now.... but my bill arrived addressed the same way (not the brightest bunch at Rogers)! Being a bill, of course it still got to me :(

Don't sign a long term contract, try not to sign one at all.

The reason is there will be new entrants coming early next year (from the wireless spectrum auction), and so they will have to beat rogers, fido, telus and bell to get any business. So you should expect cheaper deals when the new companies come in (Shaw, Dave to name a few).

I was wondering about this call display thing, maybe I'll stick with my pay as you go plan because I sure as hell don't want my government name showing up on people's CID's when doing callbacks, lol

I have a Telus blackberry for calls when i'm in N. America and a GSM phone that I throw in a sim card into for each country I travel to frequently. One of the biggest reasons I stick with Telus is to avoid the temptation to get lazy and end up anally raped with roaming and data charges from foreign carriers.

That's not true. You can go into your settings and change that.

as mentioned before I think the only setting you can actually change on your phone is whether you send your information (name+number) with each call, essentially making your number show up as private. there's no option to hide your name only, at least not with my phones (a nokia and a bberry)

I haven't noticed the mandatory caller ID thing much on my nokia, but on my old phone which was a sony ericsson, numbers that weren't in my address book would show caller information such as a last name, etc.

Rogers has better customer service and fido is pretty much the same since I believe fido is run by parts of rogers in canada. Bell (which is what I'm using) can have some really great deals for example.

250 day min.
Caller ID and Voice Mail
Weekend and Evenings (starting at 6)
Unlimted text
ect.
Final bill after tax+charges $22.40

But there have really brutal customer service. I've been lucky so far but some people I know are being over charged and they say thel'll credit their accounts and fix everything but after 6 months nothing. My friend called again and they said sorry we see the problem and will fix it but nothing happens.

Caller ID and Voice Mail

Unlimted text
Unlimited data and surfing
System access fee + 911?

It's a EPP plan. You can go on redflagdeals.com forums to do a search. If you don't work for a company that has the EPP, there are ways on how to get it on those forums ;)

Do you just call Bell asking for that plan or can you go in store and get it too?

another great thing about rogers is the huge variety of phones. You can pretty much an unlocked GSM phone from anywhere in the world and use it. In japan and see an awesome phone? buy it, germany? Buy it.
Plus rogers is the only carrier in canada right now with the blackberry bold, and that should be enough reason to switch to rogers ;)

Not quite. You have to ensure thatt he phone's primary network frequency is the correct one.

North America primarily uses 850 MHz whereas Europe and Asia is on 900 MHz. Yes, I know that 1800 and 190 MHz are available in all 3 markets but it DOES impact signal strength.

I have a BenQ Siemens that I bought from Germany and get nowhere near the signal strength nor reception that I do from my old Motorola V60i from Rogers.

You can go in the store. You would have to provide proof you work for Enbridge. I've heard though at some of the 2nd-tier shops (not official bell shops), they will do it for you if you ask.
