Two of my favourite summer activities are coming together and nearly finalised. A road trip with a favourite lady.

As I stated, the plans are nearly done and she has had her input but I would be interested in what other ladies have done and more importantly what you would like to do.

Thanks Ava. We weren't planning on going that far. We may now be looking for an alternative. The original plan was house boating on the Shuswap . With the situation unfolding, they really don't need more tourists at this time.

I think you're wise to cancel the Shuswap for now.

I don't know why you think the San Juan or Gulf Islands are "far". BC ferries cover the Gulf Islands. Washington State ferries cover the San Juans. I think of them as closer than Shuswap. In terms of distance, I'm sure they're closer than Shuswap. In terms of time to get there, well, I suppose this time of year there can be ferry delays.

When you start from the centre of the continent everything begins as far and you get closer.

I have family all over BC, many in Cache Creek, Salmon Arm, Armstrong and 100 Mile area. The good thing is I have been to nearly every part and always feel at home. I spent many memorable summers at Grandma's in Oak Bay.

Get a cabin at Moraine Lake. Clean mountain air.
Paddle around Lake Louise in a canoe
Mountain bike alongside the Trans Canada from Canmore to Banff.
Hike up to the Burgess Shale if you can.
A few of my favourite truly Canadian experiences.

white water rafting in Golden. As previously mentioned the hike up the Burgess shale is well worth it if your interested in history.

I've done a few and they are all very memorable :)

Rock Water at Secret Cove - luxury tents in the forest over looking the ocean.

Burrowing Owl in Oliver - great pool, great wine and the food was great when I was there.

Poet's Cove Pender Island - spa time, nice cabin and so so food.

Galiano Ocean Front Inn - went there in the winter to get away. Nice place, great food and plenty of R&R.

Victoria Inner Harbour (used to be a Delta Hotel) - fun times eating at local small spots, walking everywhere and went whale watching. Fun being a tourist in Victoria.

Fairmonts in Vancouver for a fun weekend. Basically room service and lots fun time.

I'd be interested to hear what you choose and how it went ;)

Thanks every one for all the great ideas and I know they are great because I have seen/done most of them at one time or another. Several were as a misspent youth and would warrant a return. Just goes to show great minds think alike and more to the fact how beautiful and wonderful western Canada is. We are fortunate.

One of my favourite side trips to YVR is a stay at the Radium Hot Springs Resort and then on to Creston, see the Formaldehyde House, lol, (just the thought of the smell of formaldehyde makes me gag) North to Kootenay Bay, ferry to Belfour, North to Ainsworth and stay at the hot springs. Then to Kaslo and to New Denver and back to Nakusp. Take the ferry at Fauquier and #6 all the way back to Vernon and down to visit some of the wineries from Kelowna to Osoyoos. I love to drive! It is spectacular!

Do it on bikes (notice plural, I'm not a big fan of two up) or in a sports car. Look for the restaurants and bars with the most pickups around them and meet the locals.

Thanks again for your great thoughts and suggestions.

Skipping Shuswap for the fires? Maybe reconsider if so: I still remember friends who attended Ironman Canada after some bad fires around there. They said the locals were so appreciative of the event and people coming, an economic and emotional boost during a rough time for them. Just a thought.

I gave that a thought. Some of my family went through the Kettle Valley fire and the last thing they needed was more people around, at the time of. I will return when things are calmer.

Since you've already done all the drives around here my suggestion is buy a Porsche, take delivery in Germany, take a road trip on the autobahn, and when you're done ship the car back to Canada.
I did something similar to that but couldn't keep the Porsche. Damn! I bought 3 combines in Belgium, and the factory took us over to the Porsche track for the day.

Anyways road trip starts Tuesday.
