I was saddened to hear that. I can only imagine what her friends and family are going through. My thoughts are with her family and friends. I guess we can take this as a time to let our loved ones know how much we love them, as we never know if or when we will see them again

Here and There
Skiers, snowboarders, skateboarders and other athletes that are pro In sports like these aren't paid by teams who operate under a cba (such as NHL for example). They're paid by product companies to endorse their products. Or that's how it was a number of years ago (haven't heard of it changing, but I don't pay attention to the industry much anymore). Definitely not saying it's right, hopefully some athletes open their eyes and push for some organization amongst themselves.

Not too long ago a snowboarder put himself out badly in a halfpipe, he had to learn to walk again and just got out snowboarding for the first time after a long time. He was a potential Olympic medalist now his career is basically over (happy to be alive though). These people need coverage.

Sarah Burke was an example to women everywhere.
She was a pioneer in her craft, had won 4 gold medals and achieved pro status in a male dominated sport.
Her perseverance made superpipe more widely recognized and accepted.
She was a spoken of with high regards in her community, friends, family and neighbors loved her.
All who met her agree she was very beautiful, smart, and happy.
She was a proud Canadian.

Rest in Peace Sarah Burke.

this is where harper should step in and have the canadian government pay for it. she did alot in the name of this country and anyone who would oppose the government paying for it would be committing political suicide.

I'm not saying you're wrong but the problem with this is unfortunately not everyone would see it as a one time act to honour her contributions. It would open the door to 100,000 others who would be claiming the government should do the same for them (and their lawyers) and unfortuantely bankrupt the country.

Such a tragedy; young, talented, and a great life ahead...all snuffed out.

Really encouraging that enough money was donated to offset the family's medical costs, though.

The $550K has been paid. Further donations are going towards the ceremony.

I just donated too.

Due the outpouring of love and support, enough funds have been raised to cover the anticipated costs related to Sarah's medical care based on numbers received from the hospital this morning, Jan 20th. Future donations will go towards post-hospital arrangements such as services and memorial costs and to establish a foundation to honor Sarah's legacy and promote the ideals she valued and embodied.Thank you from the bottom of our heart.

The sport she was participating in is inherently dangerous though, and the risk of catastrophic injury has to be pretty high. I would think that insurance costs would be huge, which is probably why she didn't have what was needed. I am not sure that I agree with making sports like this respectable at a national level since it encourages kids to participate in something that has a relatively good chance of seriously injuring them. And allmost all of those will not have enough of a public profile to get the sort of support her family has. That is not something a government should be promoting. To be honest, I had never heard of her or her sport before this story.

Why would her family be on the hook for the costs anyway? She was an adult, a creditor would have no recourse against them.

A very lucid, intelligent and well thought out question and statement.

I knew nothing of this now deceased gal before this happened....I will say it is a tragic story.....and I cant believe the hospital with a $500,000 medical bill less than 48 hours after the gal died.....total douchbags to say the least.....it is nice to see that online donations have taken care of the hospital bill and have not left the grieving family in financial ruin.....I am glad to know that people care and go above and beyond in a tragic situation such as this......also I am glad that the hospital bill got dropped to a lousy $200,000 for the 9 days she was in the hospital.

Fuck I am so glad I dont live in the USA.

That makes two of us. And, if she was ugly, you wouldn't be hearing about her now either.

Really ???????????? So explain why.................
