Haven't the Islanders learned anything?

<a href="http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=177223&hubname=" target="_blank">DiPietro signs 15 year deal with Isles</a>

They signed Alexei Yashin to a 10 year deal. That blew up in their face. Why did they do something so silly as this? Sure Dippy is good. But what happens if he has a career ending injury? What happens if he starts to tank it a la Patrick Lalime? The Islanders will probably be on the hook for the rest of the contract. And if they want to trade him? Fat chance, who wants to take a risk on a crazy multi-year contract.

Garth Snow showing that he is not a good GM. Of course DiPietro would sign that deal, who wouldn't.

Anyways, wow, just wow...I can't say much else.

if he gets injured they have to pay the full balance of whatever is
left on his contract ... one way or another, short of retirement, the
Isles are on the hook for the 67.5 million!

YIKES!

twoblues, you are right about Garth Snow. Snow was not a very good goalie and he is showing us he is not a very good GM. The Islanders management should look at how they built the great teams of past and try use some that logic to construct a great team again for Islander fans.

Wow 15 years, that's insane. They better hope he stays motivated now that he's financially secure for the rest of his career no matter the level of his play. Some players need the prospect of their next contract to keep their level of play at its peak they better hope he isn't one of them. I could maybe see a contract of that length if the player is a guaranteed future hall of famer who is one of the top one or two player in the entire league.

Snow is nothing more than a puppet and a yes man. This move was done by Wang the stupid owner. Neil Smith didnt like the situation he was in and didnt wanna be a puppet.

Islanders' owner Charles Wang, who was directly involved in the negotiations, had indicated that if DiPietro didn't sign by Friday, when the team opens training camp in Nova Scotia, that DiPietro would not play in the 2006-07 season.

I understand maybe a 5 year contract but a 15 year one? He'll be there until he's 40 lol. Signing players to long contracts rarely works because they lose their motivation. Part of the reason why the oilers run was so good was because there were so many free agents on the team I think. They all wanted the big bucks.

I am quite certain that a contract that long would be insured against injuries. Many NFL contracts are structured that way so I imagine that the idiot Islanders weren't that stupid in covering their asses.

His contract is probably insured but insurance companies have much stricter standards of what qualifies as a career ending injury than what the teams would probably like. If he suffers an injury that adversely affects his play but still allows him to play at a diminished level the team will be on the hook for a long, long time.

Stupid, stupid move. Wang will not be the owner by the time this contract runs out. So you have to ask, "where's this franchise going to land?". Nobody with money and any hockey knowledge will buy this team with both Yashin and DiPietro on the books like this, even if they could move the team. Will it fold?

Besides pissing his family fortune away, we can now add running this once proud hockey franchise into the laughing stock of the NHL to his resume. Who is........

I'm old enough to remember the Islander's glory years and it's very sad to see a great franchise go down like this. It is an embarrassment to the NHL and hockey in general. Why must idiot owners like Wang bring down such a once proud organization.

Two words...GARY BETTMAN. But really, all sports have experienced stupid and shady ownership, it just seems that the "new" NHL under Bettman is hitting new lows.

A year long lockout by the NHL because of the "greedy" players and then go and do this.......

The owners are their own worst enemies.
