Hello!

So I am visiting Vancouver next week for the first time and when I visit a city for the first time I love to explore good local restaurant.
I am staying in the downtown core. I am pretty easy going in term of trying new stuff except that I extremely allergic to shellfish (actual fish is fine) so I tend to avoid restaurant that specialize in that.

Thanks!

So many great restaurants that offer a wide selection of foods. You had best advise your server about your allergy so they can ensure there is no cross contamination with any shellfish.

One I've been to a few times is ORU in the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Their service is excellent and with shellfish on there menu, they will ensure your meal is safe.

Steaks - Black and Blue
Indian - Vij's

Nice location - The Teahouse in Stanley Park. The menu has changed a few times in recent memory but still good choices.

Lots of good restaurants, though like visiting an SP.....YMMV. Hawksworth, Cin Cin..Blue Water Cafe...........but if nothing else, go for breakfast at The Elbow Room on Davie. It's as much for the experience as for the food.

For sushi, I recommend ssakana bistro on mainland near davie.
Chambar is good for a French feel.
For a unique experience there is Dark Table, but the food is mediocre.
All the above recommendations are good too.

Now for Wannatry's requirements that is a whole different animal. Perhaps later at night in the back of Glowbal?

What do you mean by French feel? Chambar is Belgian cuisine. It's good nonetheless.

Get out of downtown.

Havana - Excellent patio, in the quirky Commercial Drive.
Richmond Night Market - Asian street food.
Burgoo - Comfort food. Wonderfully so.
Alibi Room - Best burger in Vancouver
Gyo O - Bukkake Udon. Seriously. Don't snicker.

Just get out of the core. It'll be good for your soul.

Ive been wanting to try the Belgard Kitchen, food sounds good...
Seriously, so much good food here.
OOoh, the Banana leaf is tasty, too. I can keep going?

would not miss out on the fact that Vancouver is now the most cultural diverse city in the world these days (passed New York about 6 years ago) with approx 50% of the population born in another country.

for asian, dim sum is very high standard, Vietnamese try the Phenm Penh http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/181389/restaurant/Chinatown/Phnom-Penh-Vancouver

Korean, Jang Mo Jib on Robson http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/180910/restaurant/Robson-Street-West-End/Jang-Mo-Jib-Vancouver

Banana Leaf for south east asian, robson street location recommended http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/1693179/restaurant/Robson-Street-West-End/Banana-Leaf-Vancouver

and for chinese food, downtown I would recommend Kirin however a bit pricy and so many others to choose from. most not in the downtown core though

worth a trek to Richmond on the skytrain, river rock casino have a good chinese restaurant. you will have to let the waiter know of your shellfish issue in advance at all of these asian restaurants so they don't use shellfish sauces in their cooking

hope this helps :)

landmark hotel have a revolving restaurant with an unbeatable view of the city, another option for dinner or just drinks afterwords

So many options! I'd get behind all of the recommendations already mentioned and add: The Vancouver Urban Winery - really cool setting in Railtown, Heirloom - fresh food and many gluten-free/vegan options off S Granville on 12th Ave, Kishimoto - great sushi along Commercial Drive, Gu is fun Japanese multiple locations. That's all I can think of now :) Bon appetite!

Edit to add: Oh! And Tractor in Kits is a great lunch place, healthy fresh salads. Then you could head to the beach! :)

not sure about Vancouver being 'THE MOST CULTURAL DIVERSE CITY IN THE WORLD' statement…
the different languages spoken in NYC outnumbers the ones found here. it was an article I read in NYT many years ago.
if you've ever visited NY, I think you'd probably agree. btw, it's not a dis to our fine city.

I agree, maybe summerbreeze is referring to more asians/south asians than whites?
