He wore the #29 in honour of his father. It was his dads residential school number♥
Living on the island my brother's and I could only make a couple games per year but it was a gas watching him and the Russian Rocket live.
He was proud of his heritage and he would visit 1st nations communities. I remember meeting him with my cousin and he was holding my baby nephew in his arms ♥ A cherished memory
Back about 94 ish , eight of us, couples were sitting in a restaurant in Vancouver, a late lunch, the restaurant had a small balcony. Sitting out side was gino ,pavel bure and alex mogilny, I think they were trying to woo mogilny into playing for the canucks. They finished their chat and walked in side the restaurant , we guys all stood up, got the biggest scowl ,from bure ,mogilny was dumb founded and gino walked around and shook every ones hand.
You got to have loved Gino. He would beat you with his fists, and then trash talk you in 5 different languages. Would always love when BCTV (now Global) would air the games and leave the microphones around the penalty box on "accidentally" too long when Gino was sent to the sin bin, picking up his "salty" language and have Jim Robson "apologize" for the mishap
