I am tired of drinking Tim Hortons and Starbucks (Pike Place Roast) at home. Any recommendations out there preferably a medium roast.

While you're at it, any recommendations for a coffee bean grinder. Someone gave me a couple of bags of Kicking Horse Coffee beans.

Thanks.

my favorite medium roast bean is kicking horse three sisters blend

i'm told that serious coffee aficionados insist on burr grinders for grinding their beans

i recently picked one up on sale at cambodian tire. the coffee definitely tastes different - all the 'raw' tastes that come from the inclusion of ultra fine grinds are removed, resulting in a smoother taste to the coffee. unfortunately i had kinda gotten used to the raw taste and had gotten to like it, lol!

but i'm starting to really like the burr grinder taste, and i doubt i'll go back now

also, make sure you use water with no off tastes to make your coffee. bottled water will do fine, or if you don't want to use bottled, one of those brita carbon filter carafes will do a good job. just make sure to change the filters when you are supposed to, because when the carbon gets saturated, then it starts to leach off tastes back into the water

The Kicking Horse Coffee I got is called 'Kick Ass', which according to bag says 'Dark/Corse', Sweet, Smokey and Audacious'. Have you or anyone tried this blend?

Yup, tried it and loved it! Kicking Horse is great, and Saltspring Island is also pretty good. I often find it hard to believe anyone drinks Starbucks anymore outside of the convenience factor...

the best coffee is made in a press by the way.

and i prefer a dark columbian i used to buy my beans from a speciality shop who would grind them for, freshly ground they were oily and wet. it made excellent coffee like i said in a press.

i used to agree with you 100%, but lately i've discovered that the french roast expresso beans that costco sells under the starbuck's name is actually damn good coffee (for making expresso that is). at 20-odd bucks for a 1.13kg (2.5lb) bag, it's a bargain too

now i just have to figure out what it is that starbucks does to fuck it up so bad  :fear: :faint:

i had the distinct pleasure of making a business trip to colombia where i was treated to what simply has to be the very best coffee made in the world... and number two wouldn't even show on the same page of the chart

the colombianas weren't too shabby either

In Lust Mostly
Milano Coffee on West 8th makes wonderful coffee. The owner is always trying new blends and has won awards in Europe for his offerings.

Good medium blend yet somehow full bodied, low acidity and tasty blend I like is called Conca d'oro or Valley of Gold.

Try Moja coffee in North Van. They supply to Thomas Hass who is noted for great coffee in addition to fabulous pastry and chocolate. You can also get their coffee at whole foods.

I think I have tried it at a cafe that only used the KH coffee, but it was a couple of years ago now. The coffee there was always superior to other places, if that helps. For myself, I only use Dark roast, so this Kick Ass would likey be my preference anyway.

If you don't want to get a grinder just to find out if you like it or not, try this place to see if they still serve the KH coffee, and try it first.
