It's time to get a new unlocked burner to use with 7-11 SpeakOut. Any recommendations for make & model? What sites or stores should I check?
... Obviously I want a reliable phone but doesn't have to be high end.
The best phone is one that will never exist.

I have no experience with Signal, but based on a few minutes of research, it looks like it still utilizes your primary phone number? If so, I think that is exactly what people are trying to avoid.

Based on the OP's original question, I can't see why he doesn't just use a Speakout phone? Or something like "Burner App", but he'd have to give up his Speakout # for a Burner App #.

2nd SIM card is fine, but still has your phone's IMEI with each call. Phone co can still look you up by IMEI.

I'm amazed that everyone isn't using Signal. Unlike WhatsApp & other encrypted messaging apps, you don't need to have SPs in your Contacts. You can set them up as contacts within within the app. If both parties are using Signal, then it's encrypted all the way.

I wish the SPs would at least use Protonmail. All these gmail addresses have me nervous.

Signal uses your primary number, but if 2 people are using Signal, they can send private, encrypted messages (or call, or video call) without having their number appear in the phone company's call or SMS metadata. Any communication between 2 Signal users is completely private.

Your Signal contacts are separate from your phone's Contacts (which are read by many other apps).

The only vulnerability is when an SP's phone is confiscated.

Best bet is a burner smartphone, using Signal to communicate.

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted messaging, but the people you contact must be in your Contacts, and everyone (other apps & advertisers) can see them.

An update on my suggestion to buy burner phone at Costco. They no longer carry the cheap unlocked phones as before. The cheapest is now $179 + taxes. It is a high quality phone (sorry, don't remember exactly what it is) but likely much better than what is required for a burner phone.

I was looking at a used Nexus for $50 but I got a brand new Motorola for $140. SpeakOut SIM goes in and away we go! Very pleased with it.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned when you get a new phone, get your old one unlocked and off your network/name and go pay as you go with whatever provider you want to?

I think if you purchase a phone that is not on a contract at the store and use chatr top up purchased via cash transaction you can register it under an alias name and fake address. As long as you top up each month via cash transaction and not credit card you are not tracked via the phone purchase or usage and are incognito re: privacy.
