It's time to get a new unlocked burner to use with 7-11 SpeakOut. Any recommendations for make & model? What sites or stores should I check?
Obviously I want a reliable phone but doesn't have to be high end.

Sorry if there's a thread for this already. Couldn't find one. :)

Where in Canada do you get burner phones. Don't most companies, telus, rogers, bell, fido, have policies that you have to give name and address when you get phone? I think fido has cheap pay as you go phones.

I don't know if they still do this but I got a burner from Virgin a few years ago. Never asked for name, i.d. or anything. Bought an unlocked phone from them for cash and purchased $100 top up cards from Best Buy.
Stopped using the phone earlier this year but up until then it worked fine.

Another option is to have a dual-SIM phone as your main phone. Harder to get caught with a second phone that way.

Yes and no. A dual SIM phone has a couple of its own challenges, so there's a tradeoff.

Everybody makes mistakes. Sooner or later you'd make a call / send a message from the wrong number, potentially exposing yourself.

Also social media apps will easily link the two numbers / identities, which creates another significant exposure.

There was, but the old advice is not relevant as the things change.

Phones is Canadian retail stores are still mostly locked to the providers (even if prepaid). The unlocked phone selection sucks.

You could consider buying a basic 7-11 phone during a promotion (like, right now) : $79.99 - $40 when buying a $100 top-up. That makes the cheapest smartphone you can get, even if it's not the best. I use definitely less than $100/year for the burner, so the smaller promotion (-$20 off with a $50 top-up) can be more useful.

Most bang for the buck is to buy better Chinese brands directly from China (on aliexpress or such), they are quite reliable now and still cheaper than Korean makes.
Downside is a potentially long wait. (More than a month is normal, unless you pay for a faster delivery.) The expected Canada Post strike can make it worse.

Varies now
7-11, pay cash for the phone and time. Register from the phone itself. No names given.

I have been using Speak Out by 7 11 for about four years now. The pieces are not really top notch, but I have been happy with the price and service. Usually they have 25% bonus if you buy minutes worth $100-00.

Get a cheap unlocked used phone from the phone repair store on Pender st in Chinatown, or find a used one on Craigs. Take your speakout burner sim (already activated) so you can confirm the phone is unlocked and functioning properly. Shop in the $40-$80 range (tell ‘em your spending limit). This way you can upgrade to a 1-2 yr old Samsung or LG with better memory and functions than those toy phones.

Costco has several cheap unlocked cellphones for sale. I am _NOT_ referring to the kiosk which sell phones with plans. I am talking about the cellphones that are for sale in the same section of the store where they sell large portable hard drives and usb drives (both at very good prices!!!) , etc.

Incorrect use of the dative whom.
I enjoyed that. :)

For a burner I've been using SpeakOut from 7-Eleven. There are a few more options with touch screen available there now... I think my latest one, FIGO, (after the liquid spill incident) was about $110 (?). Basic, but does the job.

Being on hold with SpeakOut is a great time to curl your hair, wash your dog, or clean your car. Lessons learned.

2nd SIM card is fine, but still has your phone's IMEI with each call. Phone co can still look you up by IMEI.

I'm amazed that everyone isn't using Signal. Unlike WhatsApp & other encrypted messaging apps, you don't need to have SPs in your Contacts. You can set them up as contacts within within the app. If both parties are using Signal, then it's encrypted all the way.

I wish the SPs would at least use Protonmail. All these gmail addresses have me nervous.
