over the last few weeks the following events have taken place:

- stock markets way down
- employment down
- oil prices down
- consumer confidence down
- investment capital down
- prime interest rate down
- hopes for a majority government..down??
- economic growth outlook...very bleak

does anyone believe the rates for SPs will follow suit or is that sector of the economy insulated from the realities of the world. it appears the gravy train is coming to a screeching halt all over the world....can this small group of individuals ride out the storm...no pun intended.

You forgot to mention that The Real Estate market ( prices ) are and will continue to drop as well.
Especially in the Vancouver vacinity.

It's a good question. Ideally that's how the invisible hand should work, since I'm of the opinion that one day's wages for the average guy = one hour with the average SP. If men aren't seeing their wages increase and the cost of living increase, it's going to kick in at some point.

However, I think back to the days of Fantasy Massage in Edmonton. When the new owner took over, business fell off a cliff and then most of the popular girls left (or most of the popular girls left and then business fell off a cliff). The owner responded by jacking the room fees and fines for the remaining girls, trying to make up for lost income. The girls either passed those higher fees onto the clients, or ate it themselves. Fantasy lasted for about three more months till it closed up shop.

My prediction is that if this downturn continues, the studios will not lower their prices, but the less popular girls and the less popular studios will be squeezed out of business. The few independents in Edmonton will either lower their rates, work longer hours, or move to other cities and towns where business is better or perceived to be better.

If that happens and the ladies want to continue to do this work, they can always go INDY in they're local city and travel to other cities from time to time. Many ladies do this.

If she's hot, guys will see her.

I honestly have been wondering about this myself as of recently...
if rates do go down I don’t think it will be by a landslide like victoria...but I think us sp's will eventually find ourselves in a position of struggling to find the volume of bookings we are used to...I think we'll have more than a few industry drop outs if anything - if the economy is doomed some of the ladies might be better off getting a square job? Now maybe I’m just stating the obvious here..But..Girls, this would be the time to save as much cash as possible..?
I was kind of under the understanding that Vancouver might have a little more help economically via the Olympics? I think everyone in Vancouver will benefit financially from the tourism influx no?
honestly...i am not very "learned" on the subject and it worries me a litte, i wish i knew more!!

threepeat - nothing is better on the other side of the fence, all though that is the standard mentality that so many people think like when looking for better options.

saving our money should have happened before the decrease in calls, it's the best way to ride out the bad times and maintain your selected standard of living.

Square jobs - I'm a huge Advocate for this - it's all about balance baby !!

True. Even if a city does have a reputation for being better for working girls, usually it takes away in other areas (more LE, higher cost of living, higher expectations or less restrictions expected from pooners). It all depends on the trade-off and what a girl is willing to put up with for the extra dough. I suppose I should have added another option, which is that SPs will just live with lower incomes.

The reason I made this prediction regarding independents is that I remember prior to the oil boom about three or four years ago, we never got visiting girls from Vancouver or Montreal coming to Edmonton. Now it's quite common. From an economic standpoint, Alberta should be more recession-resistant than almost anywhere else (who doesn't need oil?), but we'll still be affected for sure.

I definitely agree that working girls should try and save some more cash in these times, but that's true for everyone these days. I think we're less than halfway through the economic pain we're supposed to swallow.:(

Yeah, don't say Alberta might not be affected though. Depending on what OPEC does and the world economy. Crude oil right now is sitting at under 80$. Oil exploration is only profitable at over 80$ and the oilsands is $60+.

With that in mind, China is also going through tough economic times even though they are the #2 consumer. Coupled with the US going through a recession, I can't see how we won't be affected.

This whole issue with tight credit has been due to the crazy run up we've had in the past 8 years. I would just be wary right now and it could happen to any of us.
