The best singer of my lifetime. She somehow managed to never "oversing" like upstarts who list her as an inspiration: Christina or Beyonce and their ilk. Every note was always about the song itself, not about showing off technique; it always sounded like it came from her soul.

Luckily she had a long career and managed to fully realize her potential despite her personal problems and vices; no Amy Winehouse-like wasted talent for her. I just hope her last years were not as hard on her as I fear they they were. She will be remembered for a long, long time.

Oh no! Hearing "I want to be evil" at a burlesque show a couple of years ago got me into Etta, and since then I've found a lot to admire. RIP, you sultry songstress.
