I'm into day 2 of quitting smoking... Dammit this is hard... using the gum this time...seems to work better than the zyban or patch. Think I'll head out for a massage...my other addiction....
Last time when I attempted to quit, my doctor recommended a self-help book to help me get over the psychological addictions: Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking. It worked for me for 3 weeks. Then I went drinking one night, and all the things I absorbed from that book were drowned away by too much booze and everyone smoking around me - so by the end of the night I was a smoker again.LonelyGhost said:FYI: the actual physical 'addiction' takes less than 2 weeks to get over ... the patch, the gum, and all that just wean you off the nicotine to make it a little easier ...
the harder part is getting off the psychological addiction: for that, it helps to break as many other 'habits' you have that are associated with smoking.
so, if you have a smoke with coffee, switch to some other drink and go to some other place for it -- if you smoke outside Starbucks then avoid Starbucks!
if you smoke when drinking alcohol, then stop drinking for a while, or drink something non-alcoholic and avoid the usual places you drink.
the psychological addiction will stay with you for a long, long, long time ... I have now been a non-smoker (15 years) for longer than I was a smoker (13 years) but still feel like a smoke now and then ... but just don't go near them!
good luck with this ...
