Once again the cops and certain authority figures here in Alberta are blaming the Mayerthorpe RCMP massacre on grow-ops instead of the fact that the killer was a gun-toting xenophobe. I'm not a pot advocate (don't even like the stuff), but blaming pot on this is like blaming spoons on Rita McNeil getting fat.

Wolverine, you are soooooo naive. How did Rita get all that food into her mouth? C'mon....think about it........that's right! Spoons. Sure, a fork here or there but to get that large, it had to be shovelled in early and often.

If you are going to strengthen your pot argument, use a better non-analogy to get there. Say, how about "blaming pot is like Herb_the_Perb for HFS's fear of masturbation". :)

Actually, the weed's to blame for Rita's plight too! You know if you smoke too much dope it's Frito's and Coke for breakfast, deep fried Atlantic cod and chips for lunch and dinner, and a shitload of goodies in between.

The the REAL blame lies with 7-11. If they hadn't been open all the time, she wouldn't have had access while on her stoned munchie crazes. :)

What was this thread about?

Drugs in Rural Canada.

I don't have a huge opinion on Decriminalization. I think it may be a slippery slope, and is a complicated step for Western Governments, but sometimes I think, what could it hurt.

That being said, Canada is full of wide open spaces, and grow ops present a complicated problem for RURAL Police forces.

They aren't neccissarily built to fight the organized crime the surrounds big time GROWING Operations. And it is difficult to properly police vast rural areas. It takes problems and just hides them "out of site out of mind".

Illegal operations such as grow ops will change and scale upwards with their scourge on society role if Marijuana is taken away as an option for the CRIMINAL Enterprise.

We have seen the problems with METH and CRACK and what type of CRIMINAL user that creates.

POT Heads don't tend to steal to feed their habit, and the pot addiction tends to not enhance criminal behaviour.

As a result the suppliers of POT aren't by nature forced to DEAL with Harder Criminals on going.

I don't know that that being the LINE for Illegal drugs is neccessarily a bad thing.

I would think the better way of dealing with things would be to manage the "small quantity" segment of society more leniently as they are.

Pound the big producers for their adjacent criminal activities, money laundering, tax evasion (for drug purposes) etc., weapons offences.

What that will do is take the real criminals off the street.

This witch hunt is just a diversion from the real problem. Why were a bunch of fresh recruits sent into a known dangerous situation? Where are the senior cops in this? Every one in town there seemed to know what the guy was like. You would think they would have taken along a local cop there that worked in the area and knew the people?

It wasn’t a mystery this guy wasn’t fond of having people on his property. He had a pending court case for kicking people off his property. So all they would have to do is a simple search on a computer to see.

With inaccurate storys like this
From the story by Tim Naumetz The Ottawa Citizen
"We have to draw the line and we're drawing the line here," said Rev. Don Schiemann, whose son was among the officers killed by James Roszko, a violent criminal who was known to the area RCMP detachment and was found with 283 marijuana plants in his isolated yard.

Tim represents much of what wrong in media today. They did not find 283 plants, this was early disinformation by the RCMP. Our lazy reporter Tim was too lazy to check his facts. They found less than 50, hardly some big grow op worthy of a new crusade against the evil weed.

They really came to the farm because he had stopped making payments on his truck. He said it was because he had a disagreement with the car dealer that was supposed to do repairs on the vehicle. While the cops where there, they saw what they believed to be a stolen vehicle being chopped for parts. They only found this big under 50 plant grow op after they looked around some more. So really why aren’t people on some new crusade to go after stolen property, and car theft? I know it’s a big problem here in Vancouver.

Thet are easier to find than you might think.
An Asian couple recently moved into rural Manitoba,in an area that almost all white or First Nations. They immediately fenced off their property and kept to themselves. They had no visible means of support.
In other words, they stuck out like a sore thumb! They got busted with five thousand plants.
In many rural areas everybody knows everybody else and knows a lot of their business as well. And the police can pick up lots of information just by going to the local gas station and chatting with everyone. When I lived in the country I was on a first name basis with three of the members of the local RCMP detachment, and they knew all about me. They'd wave if we were out cutting the lawn or riding our horses when they drove by. In the city that doesn't happen.
What about the guys that bury atco trailers on their property? That is my favorite.

Not everyone stick out like a sore thumb.
