Decision has been made, Canucks 2018 1st round pick is going back to NCAA for another year!!

As much as I was hoping he’d sign for this year, given the phukked up state of the franchise right now, being as far away as possible is a good thing. We will get to see him at the World Juniors in Vancouver at Xmas. It doesn’t sound like it was a team decision but more so Hughes call. Good move!!

I was hoping to see him this year too. The video footage shows the guy's got some serious skills and is a great skater.

Another year in US College Hockey will do him well.

Not surprising. Though the blue line isn’t anything terribly special, there’s somewhat respectable depth given they stay healthy (lol). With Juolevi needing to make his case in camp, along with Hutton hoping to rebound it’s more likely Hughes would be scratched more often than not. Plus, not having him in the lineup might give up the best odds at drafting his brother next year so why not.

Pettersson should push heavily or make the team so there’s at least a bright spot aside from Boeser + Horvat. Also, IIRC not signing Hughes now allows us to have a year slide on his ELC if he does sign next year and plays in the AHL. But don’t quote me on it, my CBA knowledge of ELCs outside of the basics is fuzzy at best.

Thanks! While he’s not really going to grow any taller, he is not scrawny by any means. Also, he is incredibly elusive and is likely the best pure skater in this draft. If you watch some of his games in full, his IQ and speed really make him almost impossible to plaster or read. I was elated when he fell to us (thanks Chayka + Dorion) but another year of seasoning will only do wonders for him. His game is very similar to Paul Coffey or Erik Karlsson, we have to be patient to let him develop so he can reach his highest floor. He really has every tool to be an elite defenseman like the two former or Leetch. Rushing him into a rebuilding situation is terrible. He’s proven he can play against tough competition in the IIHF, now we just have to let time do it’s thing.
