Very cool.... alternative weddings/receptions can certainly make for far more intimate and memorable occasions. Of course, when it comes to weddings/receptions, even I know that I have no place butting my head into any of the planning :) That's for the mother in law to run!

Examples please........................

Speaking of alternative wedding, I have fantasize also about having a wedding in Rocky Horror way. Love that show!
It is not cost saving per se, but I thought if I have to throw a wedding, I want that to be like a costume party.
My fiancé will wear a golden bikini, and I wear smoking hot corset and garter belt.
And everyone who attend has to dress like Rocky Horror.
And I will have a fat man singing like Meat Loaf and we will dance a lot!

I will dig into that for sure!

^ that works as an alternative :)

I've seen star wars weddings... the inlaws were lumped together at the jabba the hut table....

Get away weddings... vegas weddings... bungee jumping weddings... pretty much anything other than your average church & reception style of wedding, I suppose.

Yoko - you are very wise. My kind of woman.
I would also add, its better to take that honeymoon after you have been happily married for 10 years so you really have something to cellebrate.

I know. Big ring, big wedding, big honeymoon seems to me the big waist of money.
I rather save for house or something practical.

As for the timing of marriage, I would suggest to make a plan before hand.
"let's get marry when we save 20k in the bank."

Yes, yes, romantic moments may last for the life time, and it is priceless.
But memory don't keep you warm. I rather have a nice house as soon as possible to build memory in it.
You may thinks, wow Yoko, is it all about money?
Kindda yes. Running a household takes responsibility to save and utilize the finance.
I would not marry any guy who spend 20k on a diamond ring.
That kinda shows me he does not know how to run his life wisely.
In my very humble Asian opinion.
