I saw the ad for this earlier today on the local Global station. The program airs on Sunday night at 7 PM here in Vancouver. I figured some of you might be interested. There's an area for comments at the bottom of the linked page but no "story" on that page at this point -- just the ad for the program (after sitting through one of those telus animal ads first -- how dumb is that? I had to sit through an ad just to watch another ad! :D )

The description of the show from the linked page:

Prostitution Constitution
Hookers Inc: they have a business plan and are fighting to change prostitution laws. Sex is what they’re selling, but it can be a dangerous exchange. 16:9 takes you in to their world: see what Canadian prostitutes really want and if it could bring a LEGAL brothel to a street near you.

The video of the story is now up on the linked page. It was actually one of three segments on the half hour program on Sunday night, so not as in depth a story as I was expecting. And despite moments where I thought it could veer towards the typically sensationalized direction that many of these stories go, I thought it was mostly on point.

And just to let everyone who might be interested in weighing in about it know, there is a comments area on that linked page.

As you said; too brief to be enlightening. Reasonably sympathetic, but they had to throw in a couple of the Christian ladies intervening (interfering) in the court case. "We will become a site for sex tourism" and "We will create a terrible model for our children." Valerie Scott is quite a character, though.

I am always reminded of the women of Springfield on the Simpsons episode about banning Itchy and Scratchy.

Tomorrow night on 16x9: "Human Trafficking"

This week, it's a story on "Human Trafficking." Description quoted from the page linked below:

Modern-day-slavery happening right here in Canada. People are being bought and sold, used and abused. 16:9 investigates how human trafficking has become the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, and why victims are being shipped in to Vancouver just in time for the Olympics.

Again, there is an area for comments at the bottom of the linked page.

Edit to add:

The following was aired last night on the local global late news broadcast. It looks like it may be part of the story that will run on Sunday night's 16x9 program about Human Trafficking as it relates to Vancouver and the Olympics.

Never the safest place
This sounds like it might be longer and produced by people who have more of an understanding of the situation.

The Brothel Project... screening... during the 2010 Victoria Film Festival on Sunday, January 31st.

Premieres in 2010 on Global as Part of the "Currents" Original Documentary Series

...follows journalist and activist Jody Paterson and retired sex worker Lauren Casey who want to challenge main stream thinking, push legal limits of the world's oldest profession, and open the first ever legal co-op brothel, operated by sex workers -- for sex workers -- in Victoria, BC....

Both Jody and Lauren are aware of at least four underground brothels operating in Victoria, BC, under the guise of massage parlours or escort agencies and almost 1000 independent escorts licensed with the city who are working as indoor sex workers. While the act of prostitution itself is technically not illegal in Canada, everything surrounding it is.

Filmed in New Zealand, Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, THE BROTHEL PROJECT follows these two dynamic women-on-a-mission and their foray into the world of modern day prostitution in the tea and crumpets city of Victoria...
I don't see a date or time listed yet, other than sometime in 2010, for its appearance on GlobalTV.

Maybe someone in Victoria can see it at the Film Festival and tell the rest of us what it's like.
