I have thought it interesting that most of the ladies seem refer to the gentlemen as "clients" rather than customers. Use of the term client is more associated with a profession than occupation.

Thanks for all the replies, especially the ladies.

It seems a profession could be thought to require a governing college but the dictionary definitions don't require a college so calling sex work a profession is fair game.

At the same time I saw no objection to calling sex work an occupation from the sex workers, so that's fair game as well.

And there's no doubt the women on this board are professional. Thanks all.

i agree... and believe the level of service attitude and etiquette have

much to do with this debate.

did she take the time and effort to give you a good massage ????
or did she lightly rub you for a minute and want you to turn over ????
did she offer you a hot or cold cloth a bevy and try to talk to you as a person ????
or did she just want to do you and throw you out ?????
did she pay attention to detail and watch what really exxcited you ???
or did she go through the motions and hope that they just worked ???

theres alot to think about when comparing the words occupation and profession :)

In the context of the SP industry, I think that occupation would apply to an SP who treats it like a 9 to 5 job, just doing exactly what is asked of her, nothing more, nothing less. Profession would apply to an SP who goes the extra mile for her clients, someone who practices some or all of the positive attributes listed by LADY-VIA above.

What I find rather odd about this thread is that there aren't any of the well respected members that I am pretty sure have letters after their name jumping in to agree about the use of the word professional.

Could it be that it isn't that important to them?

Maybe they aren't so insecure in their position in life, that they feel a need to denigrate others to make themselves FEEL important?

I think anyone that does their job well could be termed professional. I'd like to think I was professional in what I did ... but maybe not.

I don't agree with much you say but in some things you show incredible insight! Kudos

Except those working in the Oil related sector. More douchebags there than you can shake a stick at! Except you of course. If that is your field ;)
I spent some time in the education field, and one of the topics we covered in fairly extensive detail is whether or not teaching is a profession.

I'm really summarizing here, but in short the criteria for a "profession" was:
1) specialized skill learned through post secondary education
2) a self-governing regulatory body

So in that sense, no, SPing is not a "profession." But much like the word "hypoallergenic," the use is widespread and varied enough that at the end of the day it means very little until/unless you pull out a dictionary and become a definition nazi.

If SPs want to refer to themselves as professionals, then I flip to the looser definition, which is, "are you paid for what you do?" So in that sense, the answer is yes.

there is no escort school. :) and if there were some around im sure some women would go, and some men would want the girls who provided bad service to take a few classes and refreshen their skills. THERE ARE just some things in life you can never learn in a school, yet it can take years how to really figure out and be sucessful in what you are trying to do. I would reffer to these matters as skills learned right through the school called life its self.
