AUTOMAKERS CONCERNED OVER CROWDED WI-FI

So in this rush to add connectivity to cars, we may have overlooked a very important safety problem – overcrowding of the airwaves.

Automakers have filed a statement of concern with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), claiming that the allowing unlicensed Wi-Fi devices to share the spectrum with the systems in “connected” vehicles could cause interference with the “time-critical” vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications that are meant to drastically reduce vehicle crashes and prevent injuries and deaths.

“V2V safety technologies have the potential to significantly reduce automobile crash fatalities and injuries on our highways,” said Mike Stanton, Global Automakers’ president and CEO. “There is no room for error in vehicle safety and we want the FCC to do its homework to ensure there is no risk involved with spectrum sharing.”

The Association of Global Automakers and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers are advocacy groups of manufacturers, suppliers and trade associations worldwide. They submitted joint comments in response to an FCC proposal to open up the 5.9 GHz frequency band that has been designated for exclusive use for V2V and V2I communications to other wireless uses could cause harmful interference and affect the integrity of these safety critical communications among cars, trucks, other road users and road equipment such as traffic lights.

“We must understand that the future of auto safety lies in crash avoidance,” said Alliance President and CEO Mitch Bainwol. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said it believes connected vehicle technology could potentially address approximately 80% of crash scenarios involving non-impaired drivers. But these critical safety systems require that communications go through every time without delay.”

Currently, ten major automakers and numerous technology providers have been working with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Connected Vehicle Research Program in a pilot study of V2V performance in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nearly 3,000 cars, trucks, and transit buses are testing V2V and V2I technologies. The data from the pilot study will be used by the DOT for future potential regulatory decisions regarding communications systems for crash avoidance.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the leading advocacy group for the auto industry, represents 77% of all car and light truck sales in the United States, including the BMW Group, Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz USA, Mitsubishi Motors, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen Group of America and Volvo Cars North America.

The Association of Global Automakers represents international motor vehicle manufacturers, original equipment suppliers, and other automotive-related trade associations. Members include American Honda Motor Co., Aston Martin Lagonda of North America, Inc., Ferrari North America, Inc., Hyundai Motor America, Isuzu Motors America, Inc., Kia Motors America, Inc., Maserati North America, Inc., McLaren Automotive Ltd., Nissan North America, Inc. Peugeot Motors of America, Subaru of America, Inc., Suzuki Motor of America, Inc., and Toyota Motor North America, Inc.

Can someone redo this for BC Ferries because I also feel this way about BC ferries. :p
That "commercial" was well produced. It was soooo funny, thanks for the laugh this morning Ferris.

:D

^^^^ very funny!

The last time I had Shaw hook me up, their service was so outstanding, I was totally confused!

They gave me a two hour arrival window instead of 'sometime between 8am - 10pm, ended up calling me less than an hour after I'd moved in, came over earlier than their scheduled time, the tech found an error the booking person had made, and worked through that issue for me on the phone with his people!

I still can't figure how it happened.
That is one thing that was wrong about the video. The Shaw technician usually seem to be a LOT better trained than the CS reps!!! It is usually the technician that comes through and makes the experience a positive one...imo!! On the Island I even had one tech give me his card with his personal cell and said that if I ever have any problems to call him directly and he would take care of things. And he did on a few occasions. Of course once I moved back to the "big city" i was left to struggle for internet on my own .......:p
