Preparing for Emergencies

Does any perb member have food / water stocked up for emergencies, natural disasters, or some other events (e.g., currency collapses, supermarkets stripped bare)? Could you share your experiences?

What else should one do with money on hand to prepare for hyper-inflation and/or currency collapse/replacement? Buy gold/silver coins? But aren't even these very useful if people are going hungry? Purchase as much as possible food/seeds/...?

Say you are prepared, how do you protect all these from looters/mobs when there is chaos? If one has registered firmarms, won't they be taken away by authorities in these types of situations? Other suggestions for defensive tactics?

If the above did happen, I'd actually wish to leave this planet anyway, as I don't know what else there is for me to do . I know a proper hanging creates unconsciousness first, oxygen deprivation leading to brain death second. How about a cynide pill? Does it cause any anguish? Any other quick and painless way to go?

We have an emergency kit ready at home, and one in the car, but nothing major prepared....

Mind you, when the zombie apocalypse hits, I'll be kicking myself that I never had any firearms...

There will will always be ways of trading gold or silver for food/ fuel/ drugs/ women.
It is small and easy to transport anywhere.
I placed my bets on silver in December and I am up 40% since then vrs down 10% in my RRSP.

Just the basics

I suppose I am most prepared for an earthquake, since I figure that is the most likely disaster these parts will see.

I keep a few 'emergency' packs around (in my car trunk, at a couple of exits at my house etc.). Those each contain full first aid kits, flashlights, radio, plenty of batteries, operational cell phone with a couple extra batteries, solar blankets for warmth, runners in case I have to leave in a hurry and am bare foot, a month supply of all the medications I require, photocopies of all my ID, 2 pieces of authentic ID in each of my locations, one debit/credit card in each location and a couple thousand in cash.

At my house, I keep at least a dozen of the 5 gallon jugs of water at any given time, plenty of fuel for the BBQ in case there is no power, enough canned goods to keep me and my dogs going for six months etc.

You can never be completely prepared for anything. If there is a disaster, expect that there will be gauging for necessities, and cash will be king. In all honesty, if things turned bad, I would be much more inclined to drive or fly away - and having ID on hand and easily accessable makes that much easier.

My general thought on the matter has always been to try to make yourself comfortable in an insane environment for the first couple of weeks, and then get the heck out to a place where you can reassess how you can help make a difference in helping yourself and others rebuild, without putting myself in a compromising position.
