I feel so bad for everyone who lost their power. I am definitely thanking my lucky stars I did not...ironic because I always loose power every year for at least up to a 1/2 day! totally sucks, but can't imagine 2 days !

I'm curious if anyone ended up pooning/working during the power outage, did you guys visit any incalls with candles and use up all your data juices to hunt LL and stuff!;)

I had a situation.

My home,(with my sitter,& precious feline son) lost power for hours. Out house portable toilets went rolling down the alley, from a house under construction. Yes I'm taking about the blue plastic things, people do things in.

Can you imagine a portable toilet rolling down a hill ???

Never an easy situation when a power outage affects people. I'm sure a lot of food spoiled in people's fridges & freezers. That's so costly to replace. Feel sorry for those who have no other means of preparing meals than on a stove too. As much as we're all told to be prepared for these kinds of situations, a lot of people just aren't.

Caramel, although I wouldn't think much pooning happened, it sure would be an intimate setting with no distractions from a lot of the tech background noise we live with on a daily basis.

Lady Via, it's sure funny to imagine porta potties rolling down the hill. Hopefully it didn't create a huge mess and the construction company and/or the company that provides the portable toilets clean up the mess. Shouldn't be up to you or any other residents to do that.

lower mainland.
42 hours without power. No hot water, although cooking accomplished via gas range or outdoor grille-in between rain storms.
It does give a household the opportunity to forage through the emergency kit however. Now a shopping list to augment the kit in the event of another 24+ hour power outage.
And replenish the candle and battery inventory.

Downed trees is a visual, but self propelled out-houses is a new twist!

I'm hoping it got washed down !! So unsanitary. Especially for my cat. The exact text to me was "piss and shit everywhere. Outhouses rolled down the alley. You fence is partly knocked over. The plants, and stands went with it. You r entire deck is covered in dirt and dirt water pooling all over. Sand dollars crushed. Salvaged some. Huge mess here "

My heart sank sounded like a nightmare.

I spend hours collecting and preserving those shells, that's the saddest part. Losing my hours of work !!

All I thought was OMG holy shit !! In every way possible. !! I live close to water. I always gravitate close to water, so I'm generally hit fairly good by the wind. I feel badly for the people at the bottom of the hill. I'm up on about a 3/4 block hill and close to the peek.

I never thought about the food waste. That's unfortunate especially for those without means to easily replace stuff.

My friend put pizzas on the BBQ that night. Which I bet was interesting but not surprising to me, as I've found over the years among my male friends that almost any excuse will do, to toss things on the grill outside. Man build fire outside. Man cook food.

I do have a big stand up deep freezer, thats generally packed, but since it's summer and I'm out lots (eat out ) it's pretty much full of fruit kale and spinich, which im assuming is ok, I hsvnt had a further update though since early am yesterday.

If I had lossed power for an extended period during fall or winter, when I Do most of my cooking at home, I would have had a huge stock of meat that needed to be cooked.

That actually happened once to me. Power outage in white rock when my landlord was out of town. I couldn't access the power box. My landlord was nice enough to knock about 2-300 off the rent. I had to cook everything, and gave a bunch away. I was out of power for nearly 3 days before I could reach him and get him to send somebody. Those were dark days. God bless that BBQ then Too

And this was just a wind storm. God forbid us having to deal with a much more severe disaster such as a earthquake!! We are so reliant on power nowadays it's nothing to joke about. Especially, with laptops, smart phones etc. These devices are extremely in today's world for communication. It's really scary if you think about it, and clearly a wake-up call for us.

I'm on the Island now and it was wild up here.

Power was out numerous times, boats flipped over, trees down etc

I installed a solar powered lighting and power source a few years ago. It was put to good use. Even just to get a quick charge from a USB port is helpful.

I will come back to read replies, my power went off at 6am (right after I posted this thread lol ahhh karma) and just came back on now only 5 hours, but I was SO DEVASTATED and kicking myself for saying anything and jinxing it all, I'm not trusting it though, it turns off for a second, comes back a few seconds, then turns off. Happened on saturday first turned off for like 5 seconds but it stayed on the entire weekend, but today was off for 5 hrs we quickly got ice for all the frozen foods lol, bc hydro said it would take until 11pm midnight so I was so sad!!! I feel so bad for everyone else who've been waiting days. I've been told we have underground power lines but I don't know for sure...there are trees on houses, closed roads, and street lights smoking, sirens blazing, so much chaos.

Yes my sister has suggested this today, we actually haven't had any emergency kits since we were children, she thinks armageddon or an earthquake is going to happen (probably will) and this is a good reminder that we are so dependent on electricity! I have a power outage every year at least once, it is getting on my nerves but never lasts more than a few hours thank goodness.

yup and my sister went all over town to look for ice for a cooler, and everywhere was sold out, finally she found some just in time a reshipment happened and ironically just down the street !

I think I have memories as a kid of using lots of candles and other means of preparing foods etc...sad that this is such a common occurence here, but luckily we don't have hurricanes (maybe I shouldn't have said that...)

I live on the Rock
Sorry BadgerJohn, but it really gets me annoyed when some one starts ranting about the authorities, etc.
But let me guess, you must sit in an office & look out the window alot. Next time when its shitty out, maybe you might want to actually take a closer look at what is truly going on. I have good friends that are RCMP, Sidney Police, BC Hydro maintenance & they work there asses off to make sure things are safe & secure for the rest of us. I know I am very greatful for their time & effort & know for a fact that I wouldn't want to get a phone call in the wee hours of the morning to go ..................................
I myself have had to work outside in some pretty shitty weather, in some really shitty areas & I would not want to have to do what these fine Gentlemen & Women have taken upon themselves to do for us.
Maybe you should apologize to anyone on here that is actually one of the people you just insulted.
Cheers

47 hours before all of my power was back. Half of it back after 35 hours. Couldn't figure out why I only had partial power back.
Frozen stuff good. Didn't open the freezer during the blackout. Need to replace milk, but little else to go off in there.

Kinda blows my mind that there was so much disruption with what to me was a nice healthy breeze. Where I grew up those kinds of winds were normal. You just lean into the wind... and don't use umbrellas. And the trees grow up with winds like that and are able to handle it. And then there are Hong Kong typhoons. That is some real wind and fun (will suck a/c units out of windows). Thankfully it wasn't an earthquake, but did alert me to what I'm missing in the event of an earthquake. Some did good business over this weekend. And I had an additional reason to eat out to celebrate my birthday. :)

49 hours AND COUNTING... I am blessed to have a dear friend like Lavinia...not that anyone is truly like LaLa! I'm staying Downtown until I know the power is on, because I sure can't stand to rough it for LONG!

Biggest problem with this past weekend.
Apparently RCMP officers are useless in times of problems.

Traffic lights out at all major intersections, some lights up an operational. 4 way stops, not a single thought of traffic cops directing traffic. Nope too busy ticketing "true criminals" you know the people texting in their own cars stopped by traffic. RCMP officers hiding behind signs at intersections pulling people over for improperly going through intersections.
Just Put your fucking ticket books away and Fucking help. Can't Park their cars with lights on to block lanes where trees/ limbs have fallen. Just keep driving change lanes. Completely Useless.
Or are you opting out because it's too dangerous out there. Maybe we should all wait for the magical real police to show up.

Vancouver cops out directing traffic, Delta cops out directing traffic. Firemen get it, I saw a lot out there actually helping city crews above and beyond their other duties.

But the RCMP for the most part were useless in Surrey, Burnaby, Langley. Guess the Tim Horton's that had power had a strong police presence.

Gets to a point where if you have a major incident. Realize it will be a fucking free for all for over a week in the lowermainland.
For us just Have enough supplies for a week. And a way to protect yourself. Because we won't get any help.

Secondly, how is BC hydro so inept and so stupid that a 50-70 kmph (gusts to 100 kpmh) windstorm can take out power to close to 500k people for over 24-48 hours. Some people are still without power. Especially when guys knew about this minor Storm approaching for over a week.
All power utility companies have protection systems in place to safe guard the equipment. High power transformers are extremely costly to replace (i.e. $0.5M and up). They set up the protection to have an open circuit to the transformers rather than have them blow up and cause huge fires along with some toxic material.

It's not the force of the wind but rather the accumulation of warnings from various built in systems that a major storm is going to hit. Obviously in this case there were many determining factors that set the system to shut down to protect itself from huge damages.

It's an inconvenience for sure but the cost of replacing all different plant material is astronomical in comparison.

I agree as i saw same thing in northvan on marine , all lights out , traffic backed up for miles and some fuktard RCMP pulls into intersection with lights on to ticket a guy and blocks a whole other lane. everyone was yelling at this asshole cop ....think he would direct traffic? not a fucking chance , its below them now....

The trees were made brittle and weak by the summer drought. That contributed to them being so easily ripped apart and uprooted.

always the cheap seats which complain, criticize at the drop of a hat.

someone who actually had to do some work in their lives realizes that organizations cannot always have an instant fix for a once in a blue moon occurrence

with regards to various city law enforcement who utilize RCMP, if you don't like the service you get in your city you have the option of writing a letter to the mayor, writing to your mla, voting at the next election to change things through what is called a democratic process

volunteering to assist with government/community services when they are under budgetary restrictions

I guess the least productive citizen out there is the one who points the finger, most realistic people accommodate the shortfalls our services undergo from time to time and try and find a way to assist

of course if you are Jimmy Pattison and paying huge taxes, maybe you have a right to complain but even he just pitches in and helps or donates as he sees fit.....
