As I said, on with the hyperbole.
Read and walk. Really?
I wanted to stay out of this because I despise trolls, but the ignorance displayed is beyond belief.
Every douchebag that woke up with 3 inches of snow on his stairs and couldn't be bothered to sweep it off thinks his letter carrier is a lazy fuck. It'll be gone by tomorrow, right? Where's my cheque?
Every "small businessman" that was ever told the cheque was sent yesterday believes it. Where's my cheque?
Every whiner that didn't bother to apply or can't pass a background check thinks it's an elite club from which you can't be fired. Where's my cheque?

Try carrying a bag of mail up and down the streets in N. Van for 25 or 30 years. See how much you think you deserve to have income while they reconstruct your hip. Greedy fuckers.
Try not missing a day for 12 years, but when your life goes a little strange and you miss 3 days over two weeks? You're hauled in to explain to some low level douche why. Lazy cunts.
Try reaching into a street letter box to clear it on the DTES, or anywhere for that matter. Entitled pricks.
Dog attacks are funny. Chickenshits.

Try to enter the discussion with a modicum of real information, however outdated it may be.

Rant: Off
Anybody with half a brain and no physical disability can do all of those oh so difficult tasks that you have outlined for us.

And how often does Vancouver have 3 inches of snow?

Try working overtime when all you get is equivalent time off.

Try having only one week of non-bankable sick days.

Try having only 3 weeks of annual paid vacation days.

Try working 10 hours a day with only a half hour lunch break.

Try relying only on yourself (RRSP) for retirement.

Try working on weekends.

Try working in the private sector.

Try learning how to negotiate a deal! Pull yourself up, don't drag them down. Isn't that what this whole capitalist thing is about?

You make working in the private sector sound so wonderful. Thanks, but I will keep working for myself.

The inevitable result of union busting and working strictly for the benefit of the corporate masters is a downward slide until we are equal with all of the third world countries -- after all, the company can just move there, right?

As long as you are satisfied with the rich getting richer while the rest of us work for a pittance, I guess it is a wonderful capitalist world.

The problem will come when everyone is working for such low wages, that no one will be able to afford to buy the shit their masters are hustling. Then they will have to rethink the premise....but first, they will just try to make their shit more cheaply.

Welcome to the future of bartering for goods and services, moving back with your kids when you are old (or dieing in the street if you don't have kids). Hell, why even have governments, much less unions. Let's just depend on The Company to supply our ever-diminishing needs, as long as we are fit for slave labour.

I am glad I am getting old, and won't live to see the worst of it.

Ever heard of employee ownership plan or deferred profit sharing plan or stock options or just good old bonuses? Or are these concepts too new for you? There are many ways to motivate employees, I just don't think being in a union is one of them.

The Westjet model is a very good theoretical model for others to follow.

What I cannot figure out is why so many of you do not aspire to the same level of certainty and think that it is a bad thing that others have it.
Great response PG, I really appreciate your explanations. What you are describing sounds a little more like an insurance plan than a pension plan as there are no certainties in life (except death and taxes:fear:), you or I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.

My take on on the postal strike/back to work legislation.

OK right off the bat I will state that I am the = to a freelancer as compared to a unionised Canada Post employee....at the same time I deal with Canada Post on a daily basis with my job and I got to understand the mindset of the people I deal with and what they objected to losing.

The most prevalent issue was the bankable sick days....with the arguement being that if Canada Post can impose this on new employees then they eventaully might impose it on older employees.

This was the biggest issue and the old gaurd people that have worked for Canada Post for 10+ years dont want to lose this....when it comes down to it...the bankable sick days are pretty much like bonus paid vacation...you can bank 15 days per years....say you work 20 years and bank all of those sick days...thats just 2 months shy of a full year of paid sick leave......but in those 20 years how many days did that person report to work not 100% in a union job-protecting workplace?....a hell of a lot more than 300 IMO.

At the same time the CUPW workers get up to 7 weeks of paid vacation per year depending on time served...WOW...7 weeks of paid vacation....must be nice....I have not had a vacation in 12 years....not for lack of financial ability but for the toll it takes on me....vacations = time off of work which = no money generated and also spending money on said vacation.

Pension plan...the CUPW has a pretty good one......a very large percentage of Candians get nothing over CPP/OAS and what they can save.....nice perk/bonus that the majority of our society does not get.

Remuneration:When it comes down to it postal workers start out at pretty good wage and once you get your foot in the door and are hired as a full time permanent employee it gets better....I myeself have worked far shittier jobs for a lot less and with no benefits at all....and in a couple cases with my employer treating me like an indentured servant.

As freelancer who gets my own benefits in a different way I have to say straight up that the postal workers have it pretty good with the benefits I have pointed out as well as the others such as dental/medical/drug plans etc that have not been mentioned by anybody on this thread....and I can think of many people that would sell a kidney for a full time permanant job with Canada Post.

I myself have 13 years as a freelancer under my belt with no sick days...that would entitle me to 6 months of paid sick vacation.....wow...6 months of getting paid whilst vacationing in Thailand because I am on stress leave...pretty fucking sweet I will say....was I sick during those 13 years?....you bet your ass I was...I have suffered through food poisoning and 6 cracked ribs.... a few car accidents.....got smoked in the head by a 2 wheeled dolly whilst luckily I was looking down otherwise it would have smashed out my front teeth and broken my nose....multiple colds/flu's etc......still made it to work though....wish I could bank sick days ;)
