Irregardless of what romantic comedies try to convince us, most relationships after teenage years are a form of mutual-transaction. You exchange different things with your partner, for a certain period of time. I think in general, men are more naive about this than women. Most 30+ women are excellent at figuring out the worth of a man very quickly and decide whether he worth the time and effort or not.
IMHO, when you get out of a relationship, it's best not to burn bridges and try to remain friends. Past partners can become good friends, or friend with benefits, since they already know you personally, and if you don't have huge faults, they'd be happy to remain on good terms.
I came out of a long-term relationship a year ago, but my best decision was to try to make it as amicable as possible, and I couldn't be happier about the outcome. We're still good friends (with benefit), until either of us gets into a new relationship.

Maybe now that she's gone he's realizing he was a bit more emotionally attached to her than he thought and those hurt feelings are manifesting as resentment? Just a guess...
I've done that and still feel shitty about it.
Another lady saw what an ass I was being and talked sense into me.
Sometimes it takes an outsider's perspective to really make us see what we are doing.
I would love to hear her side of the story as well

Sometimes. But I can't help myself. lol. I am Half Irish. Half English. And Half Scottish. I may be wrong on the math. The best way to kill a joke is to explain it, but here goes. Sometimes when you hint at something tongue in cheek, you make more of a point than if you spell it out.
