They're going ahead with the doubling of the Port Mann, and when it's complete, it will cost us $2.50 each way to cross the thing. 56% of 3400 people surveyed apparently didn't think this was a bad idea. Who the phuk did they talk to? Whoever they asked, obviously didn't drive.
Story here.
This is a major piss-off in my books!

On the one hand, I don't use the bridge so it doesn't matter to me if it has a toll or not. Then again, if I still used it, I'd be annoyed, but I'd still see the benefit of it. Having lived in cities with tolls on roads, it becomes second nature after a while. Not that I condone another hand in my pocket, but it seems to be the price of progress these days.

So if "congestion is 14 hours a day" according to the province, when exactly will the reduced or toll free periods occur?

they should put the toll on the sea-to-sky highway and let the rich pay
for the bloody roads in this province!

Make it a proper toll highway like the Nurburgring... put back all the curves. Give the street racers plenty o' rope to hang themselves. It'll be like the pied piper. :)

I have friend who lives at 264th and he uses the Port Mann bridge Monday to Saturday. If he doesn't leave home early enough it takes him an hour and half each way to get to work and back. The reason it takes so long is getting across that dam bridge. He'd gladly pay the five bucks to cut his travel time in half.

I however don't liike the toll. Just add the price to our taxes like they do with every other goverment expenditure. Like they'll do with the 2010 games when it comes time to paying cost over runs.

pre paid transponders

These days many of the pay toll booths in the US use a pre-paid transponder which debits your account as you drive by. These are normally the commuter lanes and the cars do not even have to slow down. The pre-paid transponders can be bought at local retail stores and they are stuck on the the side window.

Likely the government will outsource the service to a private third party to fund and manage so through put will be a priority with them. Since conjestion is mainly at the commuter peak hours, and most commuters will use transponders, the wait times should not be bad at all.

Personally I think pay tolls which are a pay per use concept are more fair than just taxing everyone in the province. Why should the folks in Prince George have to pay higher taxes to benifit lower mainland commuters.

Just a thought......

I used to live in Toronto and Highway 407 is toll. Like Kev's friend, I am happy to pay to reduce traffic congestion and let the ones who don't want to pay stuck in 401.

Bridge Toll?

I wonder how many sailing waits more the Albion Ferry will run when this happens. Maybe they will start charging for the Albion Ferry too. I thought I heard they were building a new bridge across the Fraser connecting into the Port Kell area. The Port Mann is the raging shits, I'm glad I mainly use it on the weekends. :)

As Someone who is currently spending $150 - $200 a week on gas any small fee that would reduce the amount of traffic and the time I spend crawling along would be appreciated. Give those of us who need to get somewhere in a sensible amount of time a proper route and let the others take the alternate routes. The problem will be, like every other project in the area it will take so long to go through all the local government approval process I will probably be retired by then. The Golden Ears Bridge for example!

In a nice wet pussy!
I fully support toll bridges and highways. Vancouver drivers are too used to getting by for free, and conveniently forget that toll bridges once existed in this city, like Lions Gate for instance. Everybody hates traffic congestion; however, few want to invest in systems to eliminate it. Vancouver will continue to grow well beyond our lifetimes, that is inescapable. We should pay for our highways and bridges as we go, and not pass the debt on to our children. Consider the Big O in Montreal, which has only recently been paid down, thirty years after it was built. The majority of those who paid for the fiasco, were still in diapers in 1976. And now, the facility is so worn out, it is ready for demolition. What a pompous farce!

I've driven in countless cities all over this planet, both the progressive and pathetic varieties. The progressive ones almost always have toll, highways, privately operated highways and privately owned and operated transit systems. Experience Hong Kong or Singapore, and then try to drive Jakarta, Indonesia, and you'll see extremes that clearly gives us an example of what direction our city should be headed in.

Radical solution

Bottom line is that more roads just means more cars! Get rid
of more cars and you have more roads!

I'd like to see any policy that gets people out of their
cars, even if its unfair and punitive ...

People don't seem to understand the inherent contradiction
in screaming about paying $1 a litre for gas but quietly forking
over their share of a BILLION dollars to build a bridge no one needs!

Just think that 100,000 people in Vancouver have to work and earn
at least $50,000 in a year to pay $10,000 in taxes and ALL that money
would go to just paying for one bloody bridge!

For less effort, you could give up the car (save over $5,000 in
insurance, gas, repairs, parking etc) PLUS save the money the
government wants from you to pay for a bridge you won't need.

I hereby decree that LonelyGhost shall pay us all $250 each, every time he somehow makes use of the services of a motor vehicle, directly or indirectly, for any reason whatsoever.

Because we all know no rich people live in Surrey, they all live in Squamish nd Pemberton.

credit cards?? I'm pretty sure one if not both of those forms of payment will be accepted. It will take between 30 seconds to a minute to process each of those.
Credit cards should be quick. They don't check to see if you have room on your card, they just check if it's a valid number or not.

Of course, I live nowhere near it, and use the Port Mann 3 or 4 times a year!
I guess I just haven't found a SP in Surrey that I wanted to visit! ;)
Same here. I'll only be up in arms if I find a "can't live without visiting once a week" SP in Surrey.

I am going to be happy to pay the price of half a cup of coffee to reduce the aggravation and frustration I feel each time I have to cross the river. Not to mention that sitting in that traffic with my V8 SUV probably costs more than $2.50. San Fran. has had toll Bridges for decades as well as toronto with its 407 that I have used even when taking a cab from the airport. I cant see why we should expect to get everything for free. It needs to be a user pay system unlike transit which is mostly funded through taxes levied on the rest of us motorists.
