Going to the US for a few weeks towards the end of summer and was wondering exactly how risky is pooning in the states? Is this something I should avoid altogether?

I think it would be pretty risky. I've done it a few times in Mexico. And it's not the police you have to worry about but the drug cartel. Look on TER for your local gals or the ones on tour, read their reviews and look up other clients that see them. This will avoid the possible 'sting' and give you a chance to appreciate the GREAT talent everywhere a traveler might go.

Backpage is present in many US cities, and gals advertise there. But the experience particularly in California is that the services are often minimal no matter what you are told on the phone. The best you will often get is a HJ from maybe even a great looking gal, but that is it. And the prices can be sky high, considering the risks etc.
The SP I dated had an ad that insisted she was independent, but on arrival she stated that she worked for an agency, and so did all the other independents. So I paid the basic price, pretty much same as Calgary, but there was so much upselling for so little extra, that finally just said no more money, that was it. Never went above the basic agreement. But during the ordeal, did tell her how things are done in Alberta, and she acted, or was, quite surprised to find that we got penetration, daty etc. So the US if famous for selling snake oil, beware.
The best experience was in AMPS, but had to try several to find one that was genuine and would put out more than a HJ for a cheap price. But there was one and it was excellent.
The warnings to be careful are genuine. Stings can cost you a lot, maybe even re-entry to the US for a few years. Most experiences I had there though were pretty much a rip off, compared to what we get in Canada. This thread subject appears quite often, and the warnings and experiences are pretty much the same.

Depending upon where you are going, you might find a local gal to take along. Why not try that instead, much safer as long as she can enter the US unhindered.

expect advertised and well reviewed providers in the US to cost a LOT more than the equivalent girls here - their business costs so much more to run, especially if they have to lay aside a nest egg against the day they get stung themselves

You tend to read about all the busts that do occur and form your opinions from a very small data base.
There are so many resources available to the guy interested in finding what he is looking for and way too few resources for LE to keep up with all of the "bad boys".
Personally I have been in the hobby for over 20 years and only 2 times have I been at a place where LE made a "drop in" call. Both times it was in Vancouver. Your Vancouver, not Vancouver USA. Surprise. And, I have done a whole lot more pooning in "The States" than in the lower mainland.

It is a very useful tool for finding places, and though it is a pay site, you can browse for a few minutes. Just log out and start again.
Pick a city, any city and you will find a list of the different places, each with a very helpful map and the number of reviews (a good indicator). Click on that particular place and you will be able to read some of the older reviews, but it is best for getting locations.
