Which is adding to the argument towards raising the age for boys as well as girls. Because the way you say it here, it sounds like the boy has no concept that he had anything to do with the pregnancy.
That's right - the boy has no concept. But in my example he was humping an adult women and she has a concept that if she lets this kid in she may get pregnant.

If my underage son takes my car out and has an accident - I'm responsible.
If he's in the car with my next door neighbours wife mayby she should take responsibilty as the licensed adult.

Mmmm..

 So you would think its okay for your neighbor, or any other sexy lady who grabs your 12 year old son's attention, to have the decision-making power over him becoming a father? If we agree the kids can't comprehend what they're doing, we don't want just anyone who comes along to have that power over them. I thought that was the point of the law.

12 no - 13 mayby if he's not caught - 14 we'll see - 15 ok unless emotionally disturbed - 16 now he's taking responsibility.

I'm kidding...kids are kids and should stay that way 'till they are at least 16. Adults can be less responsible than kids. My point is society has different standards of morality for boys.

I do agree with you on that. I just don't trust the judgement of any grown woman who wants to have sex with a 12 year old boy. Ewww.

You can't be serious …..12 year olds having sex ….there is no way someone that young is ready for sex….I’m thinking you will change your tune if you had a 12 year old CHILD yourself
Well, when I was 13 (many years ago) my girlfriend (also13) gave me a blowjob everyday after school (Still fond in my memory). I had lost my virginity with a 16 year old girl when I was 12. Was it a good idea? Well looking back on it I would say it was very distracting. But it was fun! These days when I see two kids 13 years old and imagine them having sex it seems impossible - BUT IT IS NOT! It is happening every day!

The only thing I do feel strongly about is that younger people should be protected against older people. For instance a 19 year old who has sex with a 14 year old is not right.

Kids will be kids - they test, experiment, etc. The best way is to provide solid education, be open and honest with them, and provide an example which they can follow.

I don't have kids, and I don't work with kids. But one thing I do know, kids are stupid.

I was a kid once, and I got introduced into sex with a girl at a very young age (12). We did everything (yes, even anal). It messed me up for a long long time (decades). I was stupid when I was 12.

For this reason, kids need to be protected from adults and even other kids. Not only should there be a high age of consent, but they should remove the "close age" clause so that kids can be prosecuted for screwing around. Of course, no judge in his right mind would go through with a prosecution, but perhaps some stern words about how society views sexual promiscuity when one is not ready would suffice.

Fixing an age for being ready is almost pointless. Different people experience puberty at different times, and more importantly mature emotionally at different rates.

But the law requires that we set an age because we don't have a way of reliably measuring maturity. Hell, at 14 I was ready to bang the neighbour's hawt 31-year old wife and I knew what the consequences were. At 12 I didn't have a clue.

I had sex at 14, but I'm really ugly, so in dog years I would have been about 47.

What???

Three people have replied "over 16" and not given a reason. That must be a joke.

You know what guys? We have rape laws. We have sexual harrassment laws. Those laws protect people from being harmed. The age of consent is not about protecting young people. It's about imposing morality on society.
I agree with you that using a number to represent an individual's maturity is simplistic. Quoting the criminal laws does not provide the reason.

It also seems that STDs and pregnancy are also used arguments for a higher age of consent. Given proper protection, I do not think there is any correlation between the age and the likelihood of contracting STDs or becoming pregnant.

It seems that the posters in this thread think sex always involves sexual intercourse. Sex, however, does not neccesary include sexual intercourse. Sexual outercourse can provide just as much pleasure (of course this is subjective), with zero risk of becoming pregnant and ill (when performed responsibly).

Why is it that when sexual activities take place in a commercial setting, the age of consent is different? Who is to say that an 18-year-old SP is more mature than an SP who is 17 years and 11 months old? Is the younger SP expected to gain significant wisdom and revelations in the next month?

On another note, why is incest not legal? With the availability of contraceptives, the concern for the slightly higher chance of producing genetically defective offspring is non-existent. If the participants involved in incestial activities are willing and use protection, what is wrong with it? Who is being harmed?

With all that said, if you can be sure no one will ever find out, you can pretty much do anything you wish. For instance, speeding is not legal and has the potential to actually kill people, but many people frequently do it when they think they will not be caught.

The list goes on. Movie ratings, legal ages of drinking/smoking/gambling, etc. I don't think laws are intended to be fair—they somtimes have the tendency to over-protect the smart people and under-protect the stupid ones. However, smart people adapt and don't get themselves into trouble, so that they have more free time to do whatever their brilliant minds are set out to do.
