Gun ads on transit alarm firearm owners

A local group of gun owners is shocked and disturbed by a new advert at SkyTrain stations showing a bullet-riddled bull’s eye parking meter, alarm clock and lawn mower with the caption proclaiming, “What will you set your sights on? Let it out, at Vancouver’s only indoor gun range.”

Albert Wood, current secretary and past president of the Richmond Rod and Gun Club, said firearms should “never” be used as a way to let off steam.

“I look at this thing and it disturbs me,” the 74-year-old firearms instructor told 24 hours Thursday.

“We’re target shooters, we’re hunters, we’re not involved in doing vandalism or drive-by shootings or shooting up parking meters or other inanimate objects.”

DVC Ventures: Vancouver Gun Range, the business behind the advert, didn’t respond to calls by press-time Thursday.

TransLink spokesman Derek Zabel said all of the transit authority’s accepted ads follow Canadian advertising standards and there was nothing illegal in the adverts. He said a trio of posters had been placed since May at five different SkyTrain stations, four of them in Vancouver, and there has only been one complaint.

According to the TransLink advertising policy, the authority can refuse adverts if it determines an ad to be of “questionable taste,” offensive, or immoral.

Wood said he couldn’t think of anywhere the advert could be appropriately posted. He’s been teaching firearms safety for the past 41 years.

“Shooting is a serious situation,” he reasoned. “It’s not the way to let out stress by shooting. That’s anger, and we never shoot in anger.”

DVC is a Port Coquitlam gun range that offers rental weapons. The company was in the media last year during the NHL lockout for offering a practice target that showed a cartoon image in the likeness of hockey commissioner Gary Bettman.
I must admit I was surprised when I first saw it, but not offended. You?
Ladies, sorry you cannot vote, but feel free to leave your thoughts.

My new year's resolution was to stop 'being offended' by things. There are too many victims running around being offended by the most innocuous stuff. Oh crap, now I guess I'm offended...

It's the media. They have no funding for news gathering any more, so the only thing that they can do to sell advertising is to troll.

Sad that people can be offended by things like this. They arent advocating vandalism, they are just suggesting people come in and shoot targets with the things that annoy you printed on them.

Bike lanes are a good one, I think a picture of an IPhone would be popular too.
I plan on putting a few rounds into mine on wednesday. Anyone want to buy a used Iphone 4?
TOO BAD! It must be destroyed! :clap2:
