In metrotown 200 youths were playing this game and lighting off firecrackers. Tonight, there were close to a hundred youths just sitting outside Hudson's Bay in metrotown while the other day some idiot jumped the skytrain tracks to play the game.

Look left. Way left.
Texting and driving is so yesterday! Some fucktard recently got into a car accident hunting these stupid monsters.
Time to become an environmentalist society. Shitheads getting caught texting on Pokemon driving should lose all driving privileged permanently. Transit for you!

The firecracker situation was one or two people out of the entire group and the other events brought up are relatively isolated incidents.

In the month the game has been out, there has been empirical evidence that suggests the game helps in reducing both depression and anxiety in people who suffer from clinical instances of both mental health disorders. Its also been the subject of interest in helping rehabilitate soldiers with PTSD. And the average gamer is reporting walking more than 15km within a few days (maybe more). This implicates a change in the otherwise stereotypically (and with good reason to believe so) sedentary lifestyle of a person who games.

Youre straw manning your arguments by referring to the small number of people who choose to ignore the warning on the first screen of the game when it starts up (the one that says "remember to be alert at all times; stay aware of your surroundings") and ignoring the benefits. Even the application of Augmented Reality is a huge stride for the commercial tech industry.

With respect, you need to let people enjoy things because not everyone is climbing into yards, crashing cars into trees, or following these things off of cliffs.

This isn't proof of that or anything. Proof would be a Trump victory. This is just people having fun and exercise in a relatively harmless way. It's a game.

I don't understand the facination with it... but I'm from the Where's Waldo? generation..
If you played Pokemon in your youth, this is an opportunity to play it in a real a way as possible without genetic engineering coming into play. If you're a child, this is a great way to explore the world around you with a purpose, and collect cute little creatures and maybe meet some new friends. If you're an adult with no prior gaming experience or interest, it will mean nothing to you.

This really just shows there are more gamers out there than previously thought.

It wasn't meant as a defensive statement. Honestly how is a game a sign of the decline of society? I'd be interested in actually hearing an opinion instead of a Nelson like 'ha ha'.

technology is becoming our virtual chain.

People are interacting, but in an online sense, where the information is instantaneous. In an information society, every second counts, so staying up to date with the latest trends is pushing for the prevalence of FOMO (fear of missing out).

So it's not really a matter of decline, but more of a shift towards a singularity in terms of a digital consciousness/online collective.

All I can say is Arthur C. Clarke was right.

Let people have their harmless hobbies. Yeah there's a few out there that are crossing lines and people are getting hurt, but focus the ire on the problem ones, not the community as a whole.

Hmm. This is sounding familiar, no?

This retarded game doesnt even merit any more of my time. The fact you cant understand the detriment it poses speaks volumes. shall we wait for more stories of mindless teens and adults following virtual characters into streets, and dangerous pAthways harming themselves and obstructing the public?

Yes, this game is truly providing more public good and productivity than Trump ever has (sarcasm). The world would be a better place if these people put their efforts into something productive or with societal benefit, instead of being mindless lemmings chasing fake virtual characters.

If public safety was the real issue, banning cars and enforcing public transit would save 32000 lives annually.

In terms wasted productivity, I hope you don't have a sports team you like. I would hate to think of all the hours a person could have wasted following their favourite sports team instead of say... reading Steinbeck.

Again, it's a game with minimal distraction that is as a whole benefiting society for a bit. Let people have it, and I won't butch about how much money society wastes on stadiums (hint, a ton)

Furthermore. If we ban highschool football, we save 12 lives directly per year, and prevent 160 indirect deaths. Isn't that more terrifying than a Pokemon Go?

Where's your reply to MY comment? :pop2:

You talk much about how dumb pokemon is but cite fear mongering articles that merely support your viewpoint without any due diligence to the contrary.

This is a straw man fallacy and I recommend you look into the various evidence of the games impact on the improvement of mental health alone in its players. Your vitrol is what epitomizes right wing societal stagnation.

Sea to sky
People have been sitting on the couch lining up candy and throwing birds at pigs for years and no one said shit, now people are moving around and doing something people have a problem.

while I'm not much of a video gamer or anything (I prefer traditional sports as an activity for health and fitness)
I can't dismiss the benefits of these VR games.

ohithere has pointed out some compelling facts and they do make sense to me so more power to the gaming culture.
I'm for anything that will combat a sedentary lifestyle.
however, when I hear of cases where the player is endagering their lives and others is where I have objection to.
don't hate the game or gamers, but rather condone stupidity. approach with common sense is all I'm saying.

The issue is not Pokeman vs. Sports.

It is that Pokeman Go is retarded, and players of this game are stupid little lemmings, who should be doing better things in life.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2016/07/14/nypd-bill-bratton-pokemon-go/
It is basically a gigantic scavenger hunt with zero cost of entry, huge number of fellow players with common goals granting a sense of camaraderie. These are all fun and good things, so far.

The main problem is the game's user interface, a small little screen on your cell phone that you have to constantly look at while moving around in the real world, often in areas unknown to you. A better interface like Google glass would solve some of the problems. Limiting game locations to appropriate public areas will solve most of the other issues reported.

The game play as it stands now seems to be a mile wide and an inch deep. I think the majority of people playing it will have fun for a few weeks and then stop. The reports of marauding hordes will soon cease.
