I'm enjoying my new Plasma. Its a 42 Hitachi. I dont have HD yet as dishnetwork is asking a ransom to get started on Hd for now. I'll just wait, prices are only going to go one way for Hd programming pretty soon once the masses start buying all these hdtvs.

I got one too

I just moved into my own apt.. And have to buy all the funiture..
So got a nice leather chair and a Plasma TV first.
I looked at LCD or Plasma, the prices the sizes . 32" or 37" or 42" maybe a 50"
an what about .. sound .. I never was into big sound .
som I went almost the chepest i could get with the most ..
I Got a Prima ..42" with HDTV.. for$1400 plus taxe and no exstend warrenty from Future shop .. Why because .. they will be coming down in price and getting better in the next year or so .. and LCD is wat to much right now ..but I think it will be the one that suevies . and pplasma will go the way of the dowdow just like the projection TV is going.

I am happy weth mine sofar .. and as for HDTV. I bought a a DVD RCRW.. that will play back shows i record of TV in HD.. and play DVD's also in HD. SO I still get the benifit od HDTV with out paying the price . of $2000 ot more. aaAnd get a new TV when they are way down in price in s few years .:D

I have Samsung 42" model 4272 and its fantastic - its almost identical to this one:

As for longevity,

Panasonic: States in new specifications that new plasma TVs and monitors are good to 60,000 to half life.

Sony: Now out of the plasma market. Does not list a figure for LCD lineup.

Samsung: Lists 60,000 hours for plasma lineup.

Pioneer: States 60,000 hours of use in their new 2005 models.

Sharp LCD panels: States 60,000 hour life.

Thats longer than tube tv's.

In my research for shopping for my own TV, I've discovered yet another wrinkle...

As it has been pointed out, the HDTV resolution is much higher than most of the current sources. However the TVs vary greatly in how well they "upconvert", improve or clean up, the signal from non HDTV sources. The specs don't tell the whole story as some claim upconversion technology (that varies greatly in terms of how well it works), or they may use various noise filtering or other techniques.

In the end, find a good on-line review for your tentative TV choice, and the better reviews will tell you what kind of a job it does displaying old TV channels (or video tapes, DVD's, etc).

I hope that helps!

Why go with rear projection? No matter which brand, they still take up too much room.

If you don't want to go with LCD or Plasma, why not look at a projector? I have a Sony projector that's no bigger than a CD drive and it throws a huge picture on the wall. Ideal for the room where you don't want the TV to be the main article of furniture. Only problem is the one I have is a little dated and it dosen't throw enough light if there are lights on in the room. The newer ones have bulbs that throw more light.

I have a LCD TV in the kitchen that is the one I watch most.

All I can say on this topic is spend a few more bucks and make sure you get full HD resolution. Look at the TV specs and see that it says 1080P and the native resolution is full HD, which is 1920x1080.

For example look at the Sharp Aquos. Notice it will display full HD res of 1920x1080 and support 1080P.

Remember those crazy bastards in the good ol projection days. First they would get 2 projectors and line them up perfectly one over the other to get the picture brighter, then go out and buy a couple Farduja (spelling) line doublers. Probably when they were done the total cost was around $10,000-$20,000 and up for a home theater setup and thats not even starting on the audio.

To Scotty Scott

Did you become my mother? or my financial adviser? Where the hell did you get the right to tell me not to post in this thread, and hold off buying something, and then asking me if I want to run another special at the end of the month, and bitching that I sell my versace sunglasses?

As for the first Q, I am most likely going for LCD. Second Q I don't have use for a projector, the walls are small and (yeah I know here I want to buy a big assed tv):p

Just debating on flat pannel or rear projection. Is PIP worth it? It looks neat, but alas it seems to jack up the price

Go with this.....I've seen it in action and have a 60" coming in the new year.
I have it in 60" and love it!
I got 500 bucks off at Future Shop. Someone else bought it and chewed up the side of the cabinet getting it into their front door. Then they returned it because it wouldn't fit where they wanted to put it. If you really want one this big, measure your room first!

Cool! That may be. I did a measurement based on the dimensions listed and the 60" is really cutting it close so I may have to find a 55". I'm more concerned with viewing distance. How do you find the picture quality on non-HD programming?

Plasma

I shopped around for a whole year before i bought my t.v...."50" samsung plasma.when this t.v first came out in july it was 4100$ i got it on sale a month ago for 2900.i am pleased with it overall but wisg there was more hd channels hd is sooo much better then regular programing.but there will be more hd channels all the time..plasma is definatley the better buy but they really rake you over on the extended warranty,i think mine was 700$ for 4 years, iam not sure about the lcd price for warranties.Oh yeah then the high definition box was another 500$.You will not be pleased with your t.v picture without the high def box, hope this helps....
