west van , park royal brew pub, not really a gangster hang out , usually older crowd and family's , manager even said it was intimidation and reminder of new BS draconian muslim drinking laws.
west van used to have cool cops , highest paid in canada, show them your lic. and if a home boy they would drive you home.
but now they have a bunch of thugs.

I think the conversation is making some huge jumps as far as assumptions are made.

The police walking through a bar have reduced his business 35%? Really? If an owner is claiming that he's really just looking to find someone to blame for his business taking a nose dive. I have no problem with the cops doing a walk through of a bar, you don't see it often and the ones you do see them go through have usually had problems before (i.e. it's owned by the HA or there have been some other form of underhanded dealings) same goes for nightclubs. ..
I think the reason business's are suffering a bit is because of the new liquor laws, not because of the police walking through. The legal limit has been lowered to 0.5 from 0.8 so people are afraid to drink. Before you may enjoy a couple of glasses of wine. People are probably stopping at on now which will definitely affect a restaurant or pubs over head.

Doing a walk thru equates to thugs how?

Manager doesn't want the walk thru wait til he needs them.

Why would anyone be intimidated? I see cops do walk thrus all the time and people just talk to them.

I think they do walk thrus to meet girls.

how the hell is this a valid comparison- police walking through a public place compared to what you are suggesting. that goes beyond stupid!![/QUOTE]

Beyond Stupid? Your experiences with law enforcement obviously differ vastly from mine. I'm not a drug dealer or gang member, and have been stolen from and harassed/intimidated by officers after doing nothing more than highway speeding or having a headlight out because they didn't like my appearance.
A pub I frequented in the fraser valley would occasionally have bullet-proof vested officers wandering through looking for gang members with no notification to the management or staff; who would have co-operated with some notice, not wanting them there either. The atmosphere seems to change in a pub when the 'swat team' rolls through; anyone with an unpaid fine or baggie of 420 feels uncomfortable. Reeks of a police state to me - but I guess you're more of a 'law and order' kind of guy.

All cops wear vests now.

How do you think they keep tabs on where the guys who need watching hang out?

As for your troubles with police, you might not be a bad guy, but hw's your attitude?

News flash - if you have outstanding unpaid fines and baggies of weed you SHOULD feel uncomforable around the police.

You think the Nazis appeared one day? Tyranny comes to your door in a uniform. Incrementally. If it happened over night, it would be obvious.
Welcome back, Silky. So, from what you seem to be implying, these cops are looking for undesireables, maybe someone to gas or tuck into the ovens? Maybe they are there to get you, since you look scrawny and weak wristed...or maybe they can read your mind and they can see the nefarious things that you think about, seditious things...things that the thought police might be looking for to stamp out.

If you're the type who gets uppity about a couple of cops walking through a bar...then maybe you ought to take a look at how you're leading your life. Got a few warrant's? Hmmm. Why would you have a few warrants that you're worried about? Cops don't like the way you look? Then why are you looking so 'heaty'? Things to ponder.

What's wrong with being a 'law and order' guy? Is it better to be a criminal kind of guy? Is it? Can't figure out why some guys need to get all worked up over a couple of cops doing their job. So what? If you 're getting so worried...

So, by you're logic, it's better not being a 'law and order guy' and being a breaking the law kind of guy? What invite that sort of bullshit into your life? Why can't you be off the radar? Are you incapable of staying off the hit list? Is this why you're so worried? Just asking....really am curious, because your statement of 'police state' is way over the top, as you hve no idea really what a real police state is. Go live in Columbia for a few weeks, or maybe Pyongyang....

I drove all over Europe and the usa , never saw cops in swat gear walking thru any bar/pub road house/ and never ever went thru a road block.
I came home a couple weeks ago just after this draconian law came in and went thru 2 roadblocks same night. that was thanksgiving night.
This is a bullshit law and we should be making alot noise about it.
Its a cash grab for lawyers and cops.
i can work hard and be tired and be alot more dangerous driving then than after a couple glasses of wine with dinner.

I dont want to live in China. Ive been there and it sucks and people have no rights. I like Canada, and I want it to stay the way it is. Cops walking through a bar? Hardly the iron tentacle of a ruthless dictator, but I share the frustration of the OP about the attitude the new breed of police is putting out and its coming from the current governments 'law and order' style governance. I wont name any names but some of you seem to be falling right in line with how the powers that be are intimidating the public to be a bunch of spineless wimps with their asses out, ready for random inspection.

We must always put up a healthy dose of resistance to the police and opaque government actions. It keeps them crossing their T's and an eye on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, something that we are VERY lucky to have. Something the people of China could only dream of. When you say, 'You should feel lucky you dont live in North Korea so suck it up and do what the cops say" you're missing the point that we have to make sure we dont end up like North Korea, and use our fortunate position as free citizens in a fought for democratic society to remind the police and the government that they work for US, and they should do their fucking job as it was intended.

MM

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin
To your point, I do agree that we do have to make sure that the powers of the police don't violate our Chartered Rights, freedoms and make sure our gov't isn't pulling the wool over our eyes.

But, a point you seemed to miss is what do you have to worry about if the cops are just walking through a pub/bar/peeler bar? Doubt they are there checking for bartenders overpouring. More than likely looking for scumbags who are already known to them, for reasons well deserved.

As for the new laws about drunk driving, .05 is tough. So what? It gets people who already have a hard time driving sober off the streets when they've had a few pops. Throw in the more than 40km law, good! I speed, but 40 k over the limit? That's just not speeding, that's being an idiot. Remember, these cops don't just work for you, but for all of us.

Also, if you've been actually reading the papers lately, there are plenty of watch-dog groups out there monitoring the police, their actions are under scrutiny.

Yeah they work for us, in a democratic society, but for that democratic society to work properly, you got to get out and vote. Barely 55% voted in the last elections of those who were eligible to vote. Most of those were baby boomer and seniors. Most people under 40 didn't vote, and now you're bitching about our law and order society? Our gov't? Did you vote? Did you get involve in the process? If you talk about the hard fought ofr democratic rights, freedoms...then get involved if you don't like what you see.

One last thing about the cops...these are guys doing a tough job. They are well aware of their perceived rep, the current vibe of opinion. They know they never have been popular, especially now. Doubt that cop is looking for you, so if your ass is clean, you have nothing to worry about. My point is, if they have no reason to be hasseling you, don't give them a reason. If you don't like them being there, then either leave, be a hero and tell them, or just take it easy and realize these guys are just doing what they are told to do, to walk through a bar....if you feel intimidated, then just try not to pee yourself while they are there.

Seriously though, they are not there to see whether or not your beer is being poured correctly. City already had by-law officers for that.

Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
The quote is; Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I believe that was Winston Churchill. As for the police state, we are a loooonnng way from North Korea, kiddies, or Stalin's Soviet Union...Or Mugabe's Zimbabwe.
