What do people think about the political gyrations in Ottawa over the sponsorship program scandal?
Do you buy Paul Martin's line that “this government” will get to the bottom of the mismanagement of funds.
(That being said, I think they could actually do it -- after all, they have the inside track as "this government" created the mess.)

Considering this latest outright fraud, the HRDC boondoggle before it, our billion dollar gun registry, Chretien's interference in the FBDB, and many other similar fiscal fiascos, I'm thinking of doing something different this April 30. I'm going to take my tax money, throw it into an old oil drum and set it on fire. I'll then notify CCRA that I have "pre-wasted" the money to save Ottawa the trouble, thereby saving the taxpayer the cost of administering my tax monies. A videotape of the bonfire will accompany my tax return to verify that I have indeed "paid" my fair share.

And I'm opening an advertising agency in Quebec.
(So I'll need a bigger drum on April 30, 2005.)

Well said Makhno. Let me know and i'll join you in your endeavours...."Taxes by fire." All the govements are so corrupt. This is just the one little itch that we know about.

Hell no......the only thing they'll get to the bottom of is filling there pockets with "MY" money. --- Kev

I don't know about the burning money idea. I think I'll take all my tax money and give it to a SP for the best session ever. Then I'll send the CCRA a letter telling them I found someone else to fuck me out of my money this year.

This is giving pigs a bad name. This is theft and fraud - plain and simple. People should be jailed for this and all of the money found and repaid, but it won't happen. Successful politicians stay that way by covering their butts. Even Gagliano, who will take most of the blame for this will not be required to pay anything back and still pockets his pension of $94,000 a year. All Liberal poiticians are thieves and criminals and should be tried for treason. I really think nothing will change in this country until a few are assassinated. Not that I'm advocating it.

Now that's a bit of an exaggeration. Its really too bad that the lying, cheating, crooked, scum-bag politicians make the other 1% look bad.

So what is the alternative?
Dufferin makes an excellent point. Unfortunately, its not an easy question to answer. Any party that may succeed the Liberals is likely to engage in the same crap. Remember Mulroney? Just when you thought the sleaze couldn't get any worse, in comes Chretien who ends up making Mulroney look like Mother Theresa.

The interesting thing about this current scandal is the intense backlash against the politicians. Whether it's sustainable or not is an open question. For the moment, people are incredibly angry and frustrated. They don't see just the usual incompetence or ineptness we have come to know as "government" in Ottawa. They smell corruption. People don't like ineptness but they will not tolerate corruption.

The country may be in turmoil, but dammit - they're going to investigate Don Cherry. Funny if it wasn't costing me so much money.

i agree. i don't think the problems are with any particular political party. The problem is with the Party system...
i think if we elected 302 (or whatever the seat number is now) independent MP's whose job it was to represent their constituents and their country, there would be more understanding.
Dufferin:
You seem to be yearning for a true democracy, not the coterie of trained seals that passes for the Liberal caucus. What a radical notion....:)

Hopefully the BS that passes for government in Ottawa will have its limits. Today's Globe and Mail reported that an Ipsos-Reid poll shows that support for the Liberal has dropped an astounding 9% Canada-wide in the past week alone, as a direct result of the sponsorship scandal. In BC it dropped 15% to 27%. In Alberta it dropped 7% to 28%. The pollster had an interesting quote:

"Westerners just take a look at this and they say, 'This is what I always fear is wrong in Ottawa. You build up my hopes that it's going to be different and I find out that, guess what? I was right all along'."
